Thanx man, that screws that plan.
I thought the tail lights would be the issue.
On to plan b.

What's different between fastback and squareback rear guards ?
AFAIK these are interchangeable. pre-70 have the smaller rear lenses, and also differences between earlier models rear reflectors, but the metal is
the same pressing.
Notchback are a completely different pressing due to the different air intake.

They are different on each model, not only different because of the intake but mostly where the rear part rolls over at the top.
The notch and fastback have a roll over to meet up with the boot lids (each are different) whereas the squareback has no roll over since it just meets
the vertical part where the windows are.

Checked on a fasty and a squareback side by side, and they are the same shape rear fenders, so you can fit fasty panels to your squareback. The shape
of the base of the C pillar is the same on both models.
I wouldn't fit a 71 fender though to your 69 as the stock earlier small rear lenses look much better. You can get panels from several VW shops in
Melbourne, not sure about NSW though.

Different shape where the rear window pillar meets the panel.
I know, I tried it a few years ago. didn't fit
Position of the pillar shape was 2-3" off.
So is there a plan "C"

As vw variant said. They will all bolt to your car. Notch had no side vents as air intake came over the back window and through the bellows. Up to you
what rear tail lights you want to run but you run the risk of it looking like a bitsa if you cross the great model divide!
Cheers

Yep, fasty and square interchangeable, except the obviouse tail light differences with early and late model.
