hey guys where do you all get tires in sydney i need a set for 15 x 5 wheels?/? seem a little hard to find?? thanks guys

I've never been there before, but I've heard Tempe Tyres have a huge range of rubber. I'm sure any tyre place could order them in for you if they don't have it though.

cool cheers, also i got quoted $660 for conversion plates to change to wide 5 stud pattern from 4 stud does this sound right?? or is there a cheaper way to get the wide5 stud layout...theres a way better range of wheels available in 5 stud im pretty keen on going 5 spoke..thanks guys

Hmm, I haven't had experience with changing stud patterns. Someone on here can help you though!

Hi

It depends on where you live, I use Blairs Tyres at Peakhurst (they have lots of branches in other suburbs) or Versace Australia's Best Tyres at Wiley Park.

Conversion plates or adaptors would be illegal, you would be better of putting the money into a disc brake conversion and suitable rear drums.

Huh? Conversion plates? Whatever you do or get advised, query on here before doing it to make sure you're doing the right thing or paying the right price.

165 - 80 x 15 are the tyres used on VWs now..

original radial size was 155 x 15.... on beetles which have now been placed into rare vintage tyres and priced accordingly.... in Australia..
and 165 x 15 on type 3s..


and I've been thinking the same thing about alloy wheels..
4 stud beetle/type 3 alloys are very expensive and only a few wheels available....

BUT - When You were told about 5 stud.. were they talking about WIDE 5 stud as on early beetles and type 3s..??

or Porsche or commodore or Ford etc 5 stud pattern..??

but adaptors [legal in UK] aren't legal in Australia ??
although readily sold... lol

look up wheel adaptors on Classic VeeDub site..

I thought they weren't that expensive...??

You can buy New brake discs and brake drums for the rear
with whatever stud pattern You like from John Sherman in QLD... [and legal]
John has a full page add in the VWA magazine... out now ..

I got tyres for my beetle on Saturday i got Falken tyres from tyrepower at Ingleburn

15 x 195 x 65 @ $135 each
15 x 175 x 65 @ $145 each

vinatge veedub is where i got it quoted from and its the 5 wide stud pattern.. not 100% on the full legality although apparently they regualrly pass blueslips???? and htey will fit over the callipers of my disc brake 73 type 3(front only)..i rang tempe and quoted nangkangs at $80 a corner....im probably after something a little higher quality (although i know from previous cars htey make a great long lasting burnout tyre ahhaha) thats not really the intensions i have with this car :) so yeah thats the latest...anybody body have a better / cheaper solution...thanks paul1964ac falkens sound more like what i would be after :)

Yeah James they look like a good tyre and I noticed a difference as soon as I drove my bug. Here is a pic of it still on the hoist

PS: the quote from vintage veedub was withought GST....so in total with GST its about $730....ahh well you gotta do what ya gotta do right....i really want 5 spoke wheels...haha cheers guys!!!!!

Yes the diameter is approx 50 mm less so probably by 10% i will use my gps and do some tests. thankfully I was going to get 60's on the front but when I picked up my wheels from rod Penrose he advised me to stick with the 65's

I bought 145/15 nankangs for the front of my square very recently.

I am very happy with them. The car ain't a race car and isn't designed to be cornering flat out, so I think the Nankangs will be fine. They have done a few 1000 miles now with no dramas.

One more thing.. fellow Lufters report that Tyres n More at Stanmore are VW friendly and stock Nankangs and are competitve on cost. Might be worth a chat.

I am running those 145 15 Nankangs on the fronts and I dont like the skittyness of them. Just my opinion on them. At first I didnt mind them, but as always you push things as far as it will go then want more. I was looking at those 165 15 65 and was a little worried that the lower profile would look weird on a Beetle. but from Paulc pic they look fantastic.

Here's a direct quote from the Vehicle Standards Information bulletin #9 Rev 4 November 2003, published on the NSW RTA site.

"The fitment of wheel spacers (or adaptors for dual wheel conversions) between the wheel mounting face
and the road wheel is not permitted unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer."

So, now you are 100% sure on the full legality, i.e. they are not legal.

eBay! Dude, I seriously wouldn't go with those wheel convertors.. For 700,
you could easily pick up a set of rivieras or put the money to converting to
Porsche stud pattern...

thanks for the compliment the car will look 100% better once the front is lowered as soon as it is done i will post some pics

There are a few ways... The fronts are easy. You can buy front 5 x 130 rotors from any of the vw shops (or other places that I mightn't know of) and they'll bolt straight on. The rears will either need machining as mine and a many more are (this may get shot down for being illegal) or you could buy the hubs that pimpride is selling on eBay at present that i'm drooling over and fit redrilled rotors over them. Or you could wait another couple of weeks until I get the brakes that I've bought from sharpbuilt and gtmac and I could sell you mine!
