Stopping rust in tops of wings

Hi All,

I am about to start restoring my 1970 Fastback. It has rust in the "usual" spot at the top of the wings and through the box sections in that area. After I have cut out and fixed this, how do I stop it coming back? Where does the corrosion start? Is there a drain that I need to enlarge?

Thanks,

Jed in Sydney

The rust started in the tops of the guards near the A pillar courtesy of VW! When originally produced, they stuffed a bit of foam rubber up in that area. Can't remember what their thoughts were but it certainly kept moisture there to start rusting process. VW wasn't all that generous with paint in these areas as well so metal wasn't all that well protected.

Someone else on here has been cutting the reinforcing braces on the front quarters and replacing. Do a search but here's one with a bit of info.

All good help.
