New Beetle's good or bad?
I am considering
buying a 2000+ model beetle I was wondering if anyone owns one, has owned one,
and if anyone has good or bad feedback about them.

Be prepared to pay top dollar for servicing/maintenance, some of which your forced to get done by the dub mechanic.
Otherwise anyone can vouch, the increase in reliability and comfort is massive! (I neva hear Jess and Jace complaining :P)

It's just an overpriced Golf with a less practical body, I would strongly recommend a Golf 5 door of equivalent age over the New Beetle. That way you
get more rear seat room, more boot space and change in your pocket!

I hate the bloody things. Because of the fat curving A pillar, front three quarter view is bad. I was driving the yellow project two beetle a while
back and when you arrive at a roundabout it's hard to see cars approaching on the right and easy to get t-boned. I do love my mark V golf but you
need to be prepared to pay for servicing. I tried to do a simply job like change brake pads but you need a $2000 tool to push the pistons into the
calipers. Result, tilt tray to the dealer.

I have had mine for 6 years now and done nearly 190k in it during that time. It has been ultra reliable and comfortable. Despite what has been said
above, I have had no problems seeing any other traffic and you buy them because they are NOT a golf. If you want practical, there are many cars that
fill the bill but the amount of people that smile when they see ours is just amazing. They bring joy to lots of people around you as well as being a
good car to drive. You NEVER get that sort of attention in any practical car so if a beetle is what you like, go for it.

I'm with Yogie
We were up for a new car and the wife said NB
I was trying to push her into a run out Mk 5 Golf
Ended up with a new (11kms) Turbo diesel and couldnt be happier.
Yep - big dash, stupid back seats, ridiculous boot
and a whole heap of fun! 
She loves is
We get 7L/100kms in city driving
It has a HEAP of torque
Picked up some 16" mags for it
We are in Sydney and I ended up saving $7,000 on the Sydney price by buying out of Brisbane
I paid $27k registered and shipped
Couldnt come close to that with a Golf
Yes - I have heard the quality can be sus - but this is a heap better than the Mk4 Golf that i had before
I would think twice before I bought a 1600 though
That was what we had in the Golf and that was under powered to buggery
I would either go for a newer diesel or an older 2L
You cant get the diesel in an auto though, if that is what you are after

If it is any help, my daughter has just moved to Brisbane and is looking to sell her NB.
It is a 2002 (I think) with a 1.8 turbo petrol engine (goes like buggery), and a lot of extras - heated leather seats, sunroof, etc. She is selling
it because she needs the money and her new job up there comes with a car. They will still have her husbands Passat though.

Do it babe,
Despite what any one says about hating them for the shape and stuff..Get what you love..I think they are absolutely amazing and I Love my 2000 new
beetle and really couldnt give a rats ass what people think of them.
The part about not being able to see cars on your right side approaching at a round a bout is a absolute load of shit..You have full view of
everything..The dash is massive in them but you get used to it..They are amazing on fuel, I would definately look at a 2L over a 1.6 L. I have had
mine also for a couple of years now and its the best money I have ever spent..

If your a Golf fan originaly then perhaps you might like a mid age water pumper (Aka a MK2 Golf).
But Im a little biased *cough* MK2 owner *cough*
Its really your choice what you want, not anybody else's (how many people advised you to NOT buy a beetle )
Just remeber what ever you choose, you drive a Volkswagen

I went car shopping on Saturday just
to get some ideas I did find this golf.
2002 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF SE 5dr
with 76,527 kms on the clock.
Asking price is $15,000..It is in near new condition
The bad thing from my point of view is it is an auto..
I have never owned nor driven an auto.
what do you all think?

At the end of the day the new beetle was aimed for the girls i haven't seen guy driving one yet, ( but could be wrong). They are basically just a
golf as mentioned, mechanically they are good servicing isn't a problem if you know where to go, stay away from Volkswagen or euro specialists there
is a couple good shops around.

And now, like the original Beetle, the New Beetle has also become a 'collector's item' as they are no longer made. The Puebla factory in Mexico
ended production earlier this year.
The Mk2 - or 'New' New Beetle - will be released early next year and will probably be sold here in late 2011. It's based on the current Mk6 Golf
platform so it's rather bigger than the old New Beetle.
