Whitewalls

hey i remember someone on the old forum mentioning some guy who would paint your normal tyres as whitewalls or something... anyone? I don't
particularly wanna run inserts because i heard they do bad things to the bead.

Hey Jon,

I am looking into white walls at the moment too. There's a place in Melbourne called 'Antique Tyres' that I have been told is my best
bet. Don't know if there is anything similar in Sydney.

The inserts (the cut and paint ones, not the flap type) look cool, but they aren't very wide.

I'll let you know if I find anything useful.

WHITE IS GOOD...

Hey Castro,

TYRE WHITEWALLS, 0408 254 574, 9604 2289.

I have used this guy twice. His name is Brian Harrison. He is mobile so will come to you. Around the $100 mark per car. He is good. The only problem
is they are not very wide. Antique tyres have 2" flaps which are OK, around the $130 mark. Johns Rod & Custom in Melboure, 03 97962251 have
3" Australian made one's for about $130. I had these on a beetle and they were good. I have just bought a set of genuine white's and
they are the only way to go. Not cheap though.:thumb

WHITEWALLS

Hi Jay,

Yeah you can buy new whitewall tyres. I just bought a set for my 59 Holden van. I sourced mine through Antique Tyres in Melbourne. The brand is Cocker
and they are made in the US. A set of 4 was around $1200. Mine are crossply though, which are not for everybody. You can also get radials, but add
another few hundred to that figure.:o

I bought flappers from Johns Rod & Custom.

Cheers.

OUCH!

hmm... a little more than what I am currently prepared to pay... maybe some other time.

Have you had any problems with the flappers? I have heard that they can damage your tyres.

Never had a problem with a flapper damaging my tyres!! (maybe someone else has?) The only prob has been the oil in the tyres seeps through into the
flapper and stains it.
This can take 12 months maybe.

Check my photo's in the 'members rides' to see my beetle with the flappers.

so flaps are the ones u insert in right? i heard that at high speeds they rub against the tire and eventually eat thru it! although this takes a
while to do, they also don't allow the tyre bead to seat properly so it is reccomended to run a inside tube.

how wide are the ones Brian harrison does? they are the cut & paint ones right?

cheers

I have the Atlas inserts, and no problems. I also have Michelin 135's on the front, and they have a groove that seems to be made for this very
thing.. Thus not chance of cutting into your tyre wall..

They are the 1 1/2 inch ones, but as Decked said, you can get 3" ones as well, but keep in mind, that generally the wider they are, unless they
are radials as shown above, the more chance or distorting and tearing.

I would also recommend using tubes in the wheels that you are putting them in as the inserts tend to let air in along the bead of the rim and the
insert.. I was inflating my front ones 3 times a week until recently.. Now tubes are in, not once. I'm all for radials, but not on a daily
driver.. too exy..(expensive).

I recently picked up a set of NOS Olympic BLUE walls at a swap meet.. 2" or maybe more I think.. Madness... |

Whitewalls

Take it from me, the painted on 1inch whitewalls are good for a temporary job but are prone to discoloring and wearing off. I had it done twice in
12months in my single but u can't use any silicon based cleaners on the tyres as it buggers the paint. I currently run Coker 3inch whitewalls
165x15 on an oval, but are not cheap at $330 each with freight including fitting and balance.volma1 |
