Loose Head & nuts

well, picked up a $500 bug to turn into a buggy. need to drive it a bit while parts are put togather and the shed (& house) is built.

so - we bought it at night but licenced, driving & $500, its gotta be a deal; right?!

on closer inspection, beige house paint & rusty heater channels. No. 4 upper exhaust stud had been snapped but rather than remove & restud, some smart arse had drilled and tapped a new hole for a screw, a little higher and in at an angle into the orig stud.

needed a new exhaust so no worries,

house pai9nt & heater channels dont worry a buggy & get rid of stud & new exhaust = sweet.

not

pilot hole in stud for easy out went askew, case started breaking away given thin ness of nearby angled screw hole. any way, an engineering place managed to get a stud in (at an angle but with the extenal length bent to come straight outta the head).

needed a coupla extra gaskets on that header to seal given the good thread was up the stud a little.

put it all togather, looked sweet and shoulda been cool. but driving it it still popped and farted like the header hadnt sealed.

closer inspection revealed what looked combustion pulse every now and then escaping the head at No. 4.

rocker cover off & it all becomes clear.

the back head nut was 10mm up the thread and the 2nd back head nut was off completley, sitting under the rocker gear. the washer was nowhere to be seen (but it would explain the metal recovered from the puss flushed from the 1st oil change).

all back togather now & running fine.

its hard to believe how well the car ran with basically no action from No 4 & only 1/2 the nuts holding the lh head down.

waiting for next saga.
