What capacity is my engine number ??
Hey guys,
I just took the original motor out of my beetle and replaced it with a rebuilt 1300.. (SWEEEET!!!!) a few people have expressed interest in buying the
old motor, but I am not 100% clear what capacity it is.
Is there any way / resource that could help me to find the capacity from the engine number?
Cheers .. Ben.
No i'm not repainting it.

i could be wrong, but i thought that all engines that had the really early case with the built in genny stand were 1000 and 1100... bens being the
25hp 1100.... then 1200 through was the already with the bolt on genny stand..... again im not arguing, but just what i thought.

ok, this has been bugging me (excuse the pun :P) so i looked it up in my vw bible and im wrong..... ur engine number starts with 2 which means its a
55-65 1200 36hp engine. and going by the engine number its extremely likely its the original engine to your car.... sorry for the confusion..... VW
changes soooo much its hard to keep track

Hey Paul, Yeah Adam threw a spanner in the works,.. HAHA! but I trust his word, thats why I am fishing around trying to clarify it. Battery problem
was me I think, although the fan belt does need a tighten, I think I was flooding the new motor cause I was pumping the throttle before turning her
over (habit from the old engine) ... Since I stopped that.. its fired every time. hehe.

G'Day Dave, Yeah thats what I thought all along, I was basically looking to see if there was a record of engine numbers and their corresponding
capacities.

Gday Adam, again mate, sorry the motor is still there , I'm organizing transport to move it back to my place.
After speaking to you, I decided to put a shout out to see if anyone knows of a engine / numbers / capacity list. I know of lists matching numbers to
years, but never heard of one matching numbers to capacities.
No i'm not repainting it.

Nope.
The 1100cc (actually 1131cc) was produced from the earliest post-war VWs, up to 1954. The first fully imported VWs into Australia in early 1954 had
this engine. But it was replaced by the 1200cc (1192cc) 36-hp engine halfway through 1954, when Australian VWs began to be locally assembled. Both
engines have integral generator stands.
1100cc engines have numbers up to 1-379400. Anything later than that is a 1200.
The bolt-on generator stand didn't appear until 1961 with the 40-hp engine - still 1192cc but completely redesigned.
