I would guess its a 12v 200 mm flywheel but He's using 6 volt starter motors???
the starter bush needs to be replaced.... very inexpensive...
the teeth wouldn't mesh either!!
alternately, ?? He's using an 180mm flywheel [6V] and using 12 volt starter motors...??? which don't mesh correctly..
too much compression??? old wiring... small battery???
Ask Him if He has renewed the starter motor bush???
once they start wearing the end of the starter motor can move away from the ring gear on the flywheel...
and eventually maybe jam up..???
Maybe He is burning the solenoids out????
or burning the contact points in the solenoid...??
lots of options...
Lee
where are You located?????

I'm guessing you're in the US?
It's probably a high compression engine, several places there sell hi-torque starter motors,
Stock vw starter is fine for stock motors but usually stuggle once you bump up the capacity and CR.

from what i have been told it is a 12v starter in it . not sure what he burnt out but he said in a summer he burnt out 2 and now the 3rd is in .
he was not the one to build it up so not sure of flywheel but from what i seen in pic's it thro's a rooster tail of mud tel pole high.
I can't find the block # in my book maybe look'n wrong,it's an # AKO57033 motor maybe not a bug motor?
not sure how to get a pic of my gal yet loaded here will try my profile pic , it's got a thing frontend in it.

Well
If its a high compression engine then You will need a reduction starter motor... they are available just about everywhere in the US & Canada...
CIP1 CHIRCOs etc
I see You are in Ontario..
You can send pics to Me and I'll reduce them in size and post them here for You, if You can't do it...
Things were never sold in Australia...
but were sold in New Guinea and other countries in the Pacific Oceania region...
cheers
Lee

They ship all over the world and have thousands of parts in stock.
Check out their website http://www.cip1.ca/
They also have a bunch of guys there to assist you with any questions. PH: +1 604 881 7858

HAHA...
When I moved here from Sydney, Australia, I could not believe how cheap it was for VW parts here. I hadn't built a VW for a few years but finally
bought myself a house and a few Hot VW's magazines. Next thing you know I have two Beetles in my garage and a bay window bus in a storage unit......
still looking for that elusive split window single cab though.
