Lopp The Loop
Which way (clockwise or anti-clockwise) do you think is the best way to do a round trip around Australia, and why?

Keep the ocean on the right. Most backpackers seem to do it this way - they fly into Sydney and head north to the sun. That way you can meet people,
get lifts, share fuel costs etc if that's what yoiu want to do. If you're leaving now, it means youi miss the Wet season and get back down
south for spring/summer

It actually depends on what time of year you are leaving.
I went around [clockwise] in 99 for 4 months, and left Sydney in March. I'd hit Perth by April just as the wet season finsihed - and then headed
up as the waters were dropping.
It really doesn't matter - just stay out of the top end during the humid wet season - unless that's your thing. Either way - sometime in the
day you will have the sun in your eyes.
Some anal person actually worked out how many kms it would be less if you went anti-clockwise. I think it was something like 28kms
shorter....hmmm...imagine all the petrol you'd save.

I went clockwise.
Rode a pushbike via the coast to Adelaide. Then hitch hiked with bike to Albany. Rode into Perth.
Hitched up to Darwin via the coast then hitched home.
It was good going that way up the west cause it "eased" you into it. Almost all the back packers i met went that way up the west coast.
Once you get to Cairns you can rest in hoilday mode and relax before the hub bub of Sydney.
Hmmm..... they were the days and did i get into some trouble!!

Do you think your starting point makes much difference? I suppose it depends if you want to do the "remote" parts sooner or later in the
trip.
I'd also heard that it's shorter anti-clockwise. Imagine how pissed you'd be if you went clockwise and broke down 27km from home!
Doh, I just noticed my silly typo in the topic subject. Sounds like a Nordic cartoon character - Lopp The Lapp, cousin of Noggin The Nog.

while toward the end of the trip
