SOS my card is DYING.!! help :(

Hi pplz, ill try give a brief idea of whats wrong.. adn then more info as required:

My car has started
-Bunny hoping / push pedal down and get speed fluctuations. Engine going fast but not getting fast speed.

-Start the car and it stalls unless I pump the engine to high rev.s for a few MINUTES.

- first and second geer are geting very hard to put in. (they dont jump out though). To put in 1st you dont put the geer stick to the VERY left, but instead aobut 2 cm right of the left and it will then go in.. which is weird.

-Starting to vibrate as i push clutch in.

Apart from al this... the seatbelts still work ahhaah

:S

Went to mechanic (VW spares and repairs) and he said clutch is gong and carby is screwed.

SHould i get a new carby or a repair kit?? and is it possible there is a gearbox issue too?

Thanks for any help, im in much distress!!! :(

bunny hoping sounds like clutch bowden tube, check the bowden tube as its meant to have a slight bow (its the flexi pipe that your clutch cable comes out of near the gearbox)

Hard gear shifting, is it grinding at all? or just funny positions? The shifter position can be moved a little by loostening the 2 bolts holding it in place. This will allow for easier shifting if you can get it 'tuned in' right into a better position. Otherwise, it could be your shifter rod coupler bushes, if they perish, you will have difficulty shifting.

What vibrates as you put clutch in?

Stalling during a cold start without putting foot on accelerator doesn't mean your carby is completely screwed, it just means your cold start might not be operating properly. Check the electronic choke is plugged in (blade plug on the round thing). This round thing can also be turned around if loosened, so again i assume it could be 'tuned' to perfection. Carby probably due for a complete tune anyways...

Sounds like you got alot on your plate. No need for a new clutch or carby yet, nor a gearbox. Just the 'ancillaries' and tuning.

Your front trans mount could be broken so when you go to accelerate the front of the box rises and pulls the throttle on reving the engine and then pulls the clutch in at the same time so you get a hoping motion, this could also give you gear change and selection problems, you could also check the wire on the solinoid on your carb as it may have come off so i won't idle and you have to rev the ring of it to get it to go

MK.. well illl hae a look tomorrow during the day with my dad.

I understand theres tuning, and i want to do that, but is it weird that the mechanic just says the carby is buggered? I asked for it to be tuned and im sure it wasnt. Is this something one can tune by yourself or do the pros have to do it?

After that service and lack of explanation i think im oging to try volkswest!!

You need to get under the car at the front of the gearbox and see if the front gearbox mount is split or broken, i do not believe the carb is in need of replacement, has the bad running just happened or has it got progressivly worse to drive over time, there is a great book that you could get that explains about your car in a basic way and shows you how to fix it, john Murrs How to keep your volkswagen alive, it's available on line.

yeh thanks mate. Its been getting worse slowly but just went down hill badly 2 days ago. Im going to get under it and in the end i just want to diagnose it rather than not knowing what is breaking!!!

I think a proper mech has to have crack too just to get some good tuning done.

I use John Murrs book always, just this time i thought to get more opinons due to the large amount of issues all adding together!
