fuel consumption v.s power


Hi All.
just bought my T25 caravelle bus and VERY happy about it. now to start the planning for the conversion.

i have a couple of questions for the more experienced aficionados of the VW/subi thing.

I get the horsepower of the EG33 v/s EJ25 or EJ20 non turbo but am trying to research the fuel consumption, running costs and longevity of the engines.

So my questions are these:
1 what is the difference in fuel consumption between a used eg33 and ej25, given pushing a big flat front through the wind.
2 are there significant maintenance costs, tuning costs, reliability issues between the two. Clearly the svx is not so commonly done as the EJ25

I would prefer the eg33, but it is a much rarer bird and might cost much more to run. i am not looking for drag racing etc, but want a strong engine for highways and hills. Don't want turbo because of heat/maintenance issues and not really interested in a short term high performance engine. i want to be able to cruise easily.

can a few of you experienced with these conversions please give some feedback on the above and general comments. Also transmission choice VW or reversed Subi that matches the engine. does the vw box ratios match the subi and would it be strong enough for an svx

Hi Mark, if you have the space,buy a manual 4wd liberty
ej22 under 200k.
You will have everything you need for reversed gear conversion.
EJ22 engines are a reliable engine and are non interference design i.e. if the belt breaks no damage to overhead gear.
I get 11 km/L and don't take it easy.
Best bet is to drive one.

I get 580 ks out of my subaru 2ltr turbo liberty. its a 13 second 1/4 mile car in stock trim ( 100% stock ej20 v3 )

Just be careful of that it's not entirely true.
Gen1 and 2 Libs are non interference but all EJ22s after 96 are interference.

Even if the belt breaks all it will do is bend a couple of valves, pistons normally don't cop any damage.
