new steering box issues...
hi everyone, i just purchased a new steering box "no brand markings" fitted it up and had easy 3 inches of freeplay, it was terrible.... before i
sent it back i made sure i wasnt something else, but ended up fitting my old box which has jack all freeplay but it leaks out of the steering
shaft...
but anyways has anyone came across this with a new box and which brand steering box is good...

Firstly
What model VW do You have???
if its a NON Super beetle or type 3 just fill the steering box with lithium based MOLY grease..
this is what VW used in later gearboxes instead of oil...
there are plenty of good useble NON Super steering boxes available...
most people would have a spare...
but SUPER steering boxes do wear out... !!
and finding a good one of those may be difficult...
I know a lot of Super boxes are sold in the USA....
if it has no markings..
maybe chinese?? or someone who doesn't want to put their brand on it....

I had a steering box wear out on my Baja. Bought a new one and it was shit. I couldn't adjust the play out of it. So I ended up putting a very old
second hand one on, adjusted it and has been fine since.
The new one that I bought was just horrible.

yep gota love the VW market.  majority of vw parts a shit these day.
Only good parts are genuine German or NOS. Sometimes you can get good after market parts but that is a very rare thing these days. It doesn't just
apply to vw's, other cars too more and more frequently today.

There are 2 plastic bungs in the top of the box that you can remove to re oil but the bungs often break on removal. You can also unbolt the top off
the box to change the oil (bit scary though playing around with a steering box)
Some years ago I bought a no name steering box for my '68. Lasted about 6 months before I binned it. Bought a TRW branded box for the same money,
drained the oil out and filled it with Penrite steering box oil and it has been good ever since. No idea whether TRW are still available but a good
local VW workshop should be able to tell you what steering boxes are ok and what to avoid. BTW I don't think the guy that sold me the no name box is
still in business but the guy that recommended the TRW certainly is
