problems installing engine

OK, have had engine in and out several times with no issue but it has decided that it wont push into the gearbox bell housing properly. Almost push car off stands, thank God for wheel chocks.
Clutch bearing is loose, starter motor is out. Only difference is that it is not original gearbox. It's a beetle box but I think it is an earlier model, going on the brakes. I have a '68.
Question is what could be stopping me sliding it in?
Could it be differences between models in the shaft or something else? Oh it is clearanced for a 12V.

Thanks h,
I've actually got it halfway in, as in the bottom bolts are part way in their holes and the flywheel is about halfway into the housing. Could I still need to do what you are saying?

hope your not trying to stuff a 200mm flywheel into an early 180mm bell housing, get the grinder out

He said its clearanced for 12 volts [200mm]

I saw where a fellow in the US doesn't grind away any metal..

He pushes the engine in as He turns the engine over...
the ring gear does the cutting... lol

If You have had the clutch out of the earlier gearbox...

the clutch plate may not be aligned in the pressure plate...

I would suggest the input shaft isn't aligned with the spigot bearing correctly

Thanks for your advice. Turns out it wasn't clearanced I thought it was but it obviously wasn't so have been grinding and turning flywheel to check. Still more to go tomorrow.
Feel rather stupid now!
