Front torsion bar removal?
I have begun to wonder whether or not it would be ok to remove the bottom spring pack from my front beam and replace it with a sway bar like a formula
vee (link pin beam).
And to make up for the softer spring; replace the remaining top torsion bar with 20% stiffer ones from sway away.
Can this be done or would it ruin a bugs handling?
The use would be for the track and not on the street, I thought it might work as the car is now so light and never sees any weight in the front except
for perhaps a tank of fuel.

I like the idea nut it would be too soft in my opinion. You want a race car to be stiffer than stock so lightening a car has that effect, but to go
that soft would bottom out severely, esp if a lowered ride height is used. Might work with some coilover shocks, but anything wothwhile is exxy.

I agree helpers spring on the shocks would be required. The reason you don't see them in Formula Vee is that they are specifically banned.
In Vee's it is common to see elastic bump stops so under brakes the whole car doesn't bottom but there is a little bit of give.
If you making up a torsion bar set up we install solid spacers between the beam and the arms.
The other thing we do is thread the end of the torsion bar to able to firm things up so the loaded wheel doesn't go into positive camber. Creative
Machining in Melbourne make them up.
You'd also be advised to knock out the botton spring pack centre clamp so you can install the same size roll bar all the way through the beam.

I assume that you have fitted the compensating spring, Shaun, and now you are looking for more front grip - is this correct?
Have you entered for the Super-sprints?
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Hi greg,
fitted the camber compensator; front sway bar, new wheel bearings (I had a ball bearing inner and roller outers!!) got the new wheels fitted with the
vee tyres, installed new shift linkage, also done a little more lightening. The only step backwards is I had to remove the extractor as it got bent
taking the car of a hire trailer (nightmare!!)
I hope the camber compensator is on ok; it was awkward drilling the holes lying on my back! in the process I over run into a axle boot and caused a
leak
