I drove from brisbane to perth and kept the details of how many litres i put in the beast and i got an average of 12L/100. Which was pretty damn good i thought and that was sitting on 110 most of the way. I checked the kilometres i did on the net and not from the odometer.

It was in a 1303L bug and had a 1916, 40mm inlet valves, 40mm webers and the car was filled with mine and brothers stuff at about 17kgs each. Definitely worth the money i payed to get the carbs tuned to the engine, probably payed for itself i would say.

It was also worth doing the drive.

I have a client with a trike with a 96 rwhp, 2165 dual Webered VW engine that gets consistantly 10L/100. Marcus has a similar engine in his bay single cab, his fuel economy improved when he upgraded his engine from the original 1600 !!!

Fully loaded kombi 1835cc -34pict carb Toowoomba-Mt Isa 16lt/100k average speed about 100kph
2002 VW Polo Toowoomba (qld) -Warrnambool (vic) 22hrs non stop, aircon going , I wasn't overtaken once. Average speed ffffast. 6.2lt/100k. You cant deny technology and aerodynamics. With only 55kw at my disposal the polo only came up short on real steep hills, like the kombi I guess.........

No , 1.4lt 16 valve petrol. We only use 98 octane because it can use all the help it can get. mmmmmm........ I wonder how that engine would go in a bug!

My T3 2.1 kombi has been getting slowly worse as far as economy goes. Didn't notice really, but power had been dropping off too for some time. Well on the weekend, after towing a manx racer to Casino, fuel economy went out the window....360km on 70 liters, and hills nearly killed the bus, turns out 3 of the 4 injectors had spray patterns like a dribbling sponge......she's going like a rocket now, economy has improved out of sight. Point.......state of tune goes along way towards getting good economy.
