1916cc or 2332cc ?


Hi I have a couple of questions regarding the 2 engine size's

What are the things to consider regarding reliability?

At the moment I have the choice of cars to consider

1 - 72 beetle - 1916 - std 1600 gear box and diff etc
2 - 70 beetle - 2332 - gear box to suit.

I will be using the car as a weekender and to take the wife and 15month old son on drives etc , maybe the odd track day if possible

the 2332 is stretching the budget.

I have had performance cars before(Not VW) that have cost a lot to run (servicing etc) would there be much differnce between the 2 on this side of things.

any coments welcome.

Well good to have the power but do they have the braking to match?

for me when i replace the engine in my 69 it will go from a 1600 to a 1916 I think that is more than sufficient for me

There should be no difference between the 1914 and the 2332 in terms of reliability if all things are equal, quality components and built properly, the bigger engine should produce more torque, also it's also the way you drive and maintain it.

you really need to know more about cams, rocker geometry, rockers, comp ratio etc etc

Me personally - I would go a 1916

hhhm, tuff decisions....i like riding in my mates 2332cc.so smooth and easy to drive even with ida's,then bam, put the foot into it,,fun fun.....

who built the engines could also be a consideration.....

They are both Rod Penrose engines.

Forgot to mention that the
1916 has done about 20000kms
2332 has done around 500 - 1000kms

I don't have many facts on the specs of the engines/cars

The 72 is yellow (Steve carters old bug)not sure on the gearbox as the owner is keeping the one that was in the car for his next project.he is keeping the 1916 as well but I have asked if he would put it back in.the pan has some holes that have been siliconed up.the paint is ok although the guards and rear apron need repainting and the interior needs tidying up.
The 70 is black/blue and was at the nationals on the weekend.nothing to do to it.pan looks good.paint is good.just a few small things I would change for my own taste.

I know that 72 yellow bug well and can vouch for it having an excellent history.

personally id lean towards a 1916 for the reason that i'd be worried about reliability of anything bigger than this. has the 2332 got extra oil cooling etc? also with the extra kms on the 1916 its most likely that any minor issues have been well sorted by now

by the sounds of it you want a car to cruise around in as opposed to a high revving screamer for track use. for me anyway a 1916 with well sorted twin carbs would be the go - fat, lazy torque to cruise around on without the reliability issues always in the back of my mind

I've herd/seen that 2332 take off and it's a monster.
Still, it's always lottery - the 2332 may last you many years and the 1916 may break in a week and vice versa.

the fact I was meaning was the 1915 has 20k km and the stroker has f'all, therefore buy the 1915 as it will be the most reliable. I say that, not because all 2332's are unreliable, but if I built a 'proper' 2332, I know I wouldn't sell it in a matter of a few thousand k's (or less). You work it out.

Good point Matt. And sometimes an engine with a few more k's under it's belt has proven it's worth in the aspect of reliability

Its a published trend in the areas of machine reliability trends that we studied last yr.

New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta!

True, but the initial stage for an aircooled VW engine is the first 20,000kms. IMHO

Hear hear Marcus, just about any Volksie can go for a few thousand k's.

A rebuild I undertook recently (2165 cc) the pistons were actually hitting the head the deck height was sooo tight, it was 4500km old and had no signs of pending doom, it was pulled down as the cautious new owner wanted to 'check it out'.

I was in Casino the other weekend at the drags and a local explained how he could only ever get his 1835's to last 10 000km, and he built three of them !!!

I hear this type of argument all the time....that any big Volksie hasn't a hope of staying together.....bullocks, it how they are built where the problems start.

I have decided to purchase the car that has the 2332 in due to all the other parts it has also the engine.

Hope to collect the on Friday.

P.s the engine on the 1916 put together by the owner .I found out that Stephen muller put the engine together on the 2332.
