I think I understand suspension, and then I get confused again...

Alright, so I like to think I understand a little about VW's and the model changes and their history, etc.

However I suck at understanding suspension.

So could someone please lay out in what year (let's go Aussie beetles for ease sake) suspension changed from Swing Axle to IRS.

I've just had a gander at a '69 1500 and from previous knowledge I thought it was IRS... Or am I wrong?

Cheers,

Ollie

P.s. Yes I'm embarassed for such an novice question :)

First IRS in Austrailia was on the Semiauto beetles in 1968. These were full import cars. Manual was still swingaxle.

Then all Superbugs have IRS. from 70-71 (whenever they came out)

And lastly the beetles built in 1976 had IRS rear and Balljoint front. This was the last year model that they were produced in Australia and they were using up all the leftover bits.

Hope this helps.

So a manual 1969 1500 would be swing axle?

You are correct.

All cars that were manual and standard (non superbug) were swingaxle except the 1976 year model.

think of it as more like 1500 single intake engines are probably IRS... But if you have a look under both they are unmistakably different and an easy spot
