6Volt battery needs charging


How does one charge a 6 volt battery when one only has a 12 volt charger? I tried to push start my bug down my hill, but i think its that stuffed that it wont start... so i need to be able to crank it...

help?!:cry

I think my charger @ home can do 6 & 12v. I'll check tonight. If it does, you are most welcome to borrow it. I am in East Kew

6V chargers are getting impossible to get. You can use a 12V to charge but you will need 2 6V batteries.
Connect the +ve from the charger to +ve of battery No. 1 & -ve from the charger to -ve of battery No.2. Then just connect -ve from battery No.1 to +ve of battery No.2 to complete the link.

I bought a 6v/12v battery charger from Supa Cheap Auto a couple of years ago they were about $40 most auto shops would ahve them or be able to get them

you can charge the 6v from a 12volt charger. Just half the amount of time you would charge a 12v (assuming the amp hours are about double)

It fried the rectifier inside the charger!!!

You can jump start your 6 volt battery with a 12 volt one for a very short period of time. we used to do that to my brothers 6 volt bug

I'm sure my charger can do it but if it stuffed yours then I would suggest that you connect a ballast resistor in series with the positive side. That way your charger thinks its doing its thing and your 6v batter is only getting 6V. Early toyotas all run a 6v coil (just about anyway) so they are easy to get hold of.

mmmm... glad i didn't attempt to charge my 6V batt with my 12V charger at all then!... fried stuff only smells good when its chicken based, not electronic based...

I managed to borrow Raf's charger and its working fine... the charger and battery that it... dam bug still won't start!

yeah sorry but go buy a better charger mine does both 6 and 12.

yes u will fry the charger if you try and dump 12 into 6
