IRS ing an early Type 3 ?????

Howdy People
Can anyone tell me wether I can swap my 64 type 3 swingaxle gearbox for a 72 Type 3 IRS gearbox. (Not the whole rear end but just the gearbox) or for that matter does anyone have a drawing or phtos or advice on swapping the whole rear end particularly with regard to fabricating brackets and positioning on car for engine hanger.Cheers Paul

Cheers Paul

Paul,
the best way to do this isto swap over the whole subframe as per 'bus 914's photo, this will bolt straight up the find a wrecked '70 up T3 and cut the rear mounts out of it, then fit them to the early one. Very straight forward swap.

Thanks Jack and Ian
Suppose I am just procrastinating
I have a late IRS rear end ready to go - was going to stick to the swingy but the g box has leaked all over the clutch and is difficult to change gears. Might as well do it though - just haing some issues in my head about those rear mounts suppose it will come apparent when I take it on

I would tend to swapping the whole chassis over rather than trying to line up the brackets without a proper jig.

VVDS has a jig for a Beetle chassis conversion and allows welding to be done with better acuracy.

I think i would like to remove the body from chassis to get better acces for welding if you do intend on fitting them to the type 3.

You would also have the problem of 4 stud rear end and 5 stud front end....

Just swap the drums over to the early ones, they are the same size

Hi

Humpty from WA wrote a really good article on fitting a cradle to hold the box in on IRS type 3.
