spare wheel size
anyone have any experience with fitting a larger than normal spare wheel into a standard wheel well?
i have ssen it done in mags, but wonder if there are any practical problems that peaple have run into.
i have a 5.5 wheel that i want to use as my spare, in my 60 bug project. tyres on the front will be 175/55/15s, and if it fits, the one on the spare
will be the same.
any opinions as to whether it will fit without modification?

Then you would have two flat tires.
I carry my wider than normal tire under the bonnet, on top of the fuel tank. Where the spare tire used to live, is where I keep a hydralic jack spare
oil, fuel, brake fluid and other stuff.

Pretty hatd to fit a wider tyre than the stock Xplys in the front spare tyre space.
Better off treating it like one of those space savers that they use in Eupopean cars. Use standard rim with a 135 tyre as a temp spare only. My
experience has been that modern tyres rarely get punctures anyway.
I have a standard size rim with Xply tyre as a spare in the 57.

I know its pretty hard to get a standard rim with a 165/80 radial in and out of the wheel well so I went for a 95/110 on a standard rim, no thats not
a miss print it is 95mm wide!! Kim I guess you could try some thing like a 145/65 on your 5.5 It might fit their Continentals aswell so they'll
match your 175/55s too. I ordered some on Friday $146 each, hope this helps.

well i did and it might work duncombemu.
given that a clever person, would of coarse carry a tyre pump to infate the one without a hole in it .

psuedo space saver is the way to go.. ie: keep the stock rim under the bonnet...
my 2c worth
my last bug had 13" front rims but still had wide 15" on the rear, so i didnt even bother with a spare... never got a flat... touch
wood..................... wouldn't have fitted the front even if i did....

Hi
I use a Porsche space saver, but you can pick up space savers from lots of cars nowadays, just find one that fits and have the tyre fitted to a beetle
rim or have a beetle centre welded into the space saver wheel.
