clutch cable on 1968 beetle
how do ya change a clutch cable on 1968 beetle any help?? step by step...thanks

I presume you want to replace the old/broken one with a new one.
1. Remove the passengers seat and the front floor covering.
2. Remove the cover plate on the passengers side of the tunnel (two bolts).
3. Detatch the linkage between the throttle pedal and the pedal cluster spindle.
4. Remove the circlip and detatch the master cylinder push rod from the brake pedal.
5. Detatch the throttle cable from its operating arm.
6. Remove the pedal cluster mounting bolts (in the floor, two bolts).
7. Slide the whole cluster out from the side of the tunnel. The end of the clutch cable should still be on its hook. If it has come off, your fingers
can be pushed into the hole to get hold of it.
The front portion of the broken cable can easily be puller out. If the break has occured right at the back, the cable does sometimes get jammedin the
bowed portion of the conduit at the rear. If this does occour, this flexible portion of the conduit can be detatched at the rear by pulling it out of
its mounting socket.
The rear portion can easily be removed after the wing nut has been removed. Do not loosen the sealing grommet which fits over the rear end of the
conduit.

Dunc forgot to mention reversing the procedure can drive you to drink, drugs or insanity because the eyelet at the front keeps dropping off its lever
when you put the pedals back. This is why you may see beetles with holes cut out of the tunnel near the pedals. To avoid the 3 calamaties, you either
need a helper or you get sneaky. The helper, acc to John Muir's book, pulls on the cable under the car to keep the tension on the hook. I prefer
the sneaky way- use a big rubber band twisted around the eyelet & hook. Yes, it will fall off eventually but will not interfer with anything. 50
years from now when someone restores your car & finds the rubber band, they are going to be stuffed wondering how it got there!

thanks guys, we will probably get the new clutch cable tomorow i will try the rubber band trick, as for removing the pedal cluster..most of our clips
are missing anyway so it shouldn't be too hard, i was looking at the arm the pushes the brake and it has not clip on it and could of fallen off
anytime with enough sideways force, scary
