very slight gearbox whooooffff noise?
i notice that when i have my baja on, if i engage the clutch, a very low volume, low pitch kinda smooth noise comes from the transmission.
It sounds almost the same as a failed wheel bearing on say a ricer fwd car, cept alot smoother, and faint.
If i disengage the clutch (motor no longer driving the gearbox) it stops. It this something i should be alarmed about?
could it just be noise being transmitted into the cabin because of the gearbox mid strap tensioned on the rear forks not having rubber? or because the
shifter linkage is also solid mount allowing such noise to be heard?
all gears work, and didn't pop out when i took it for a spin. maybe it just needs a run in after sitting so long perhaps...

wait i probably got my wording wrong... the throw out bearing wouldn't make that noise would it if i didn't have my foot on the clutch? or only if i
did?
i put my foot on the clutch and it stops the noise...

OK, so I'm no help........is it a 'dog' box?
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Pretty sure the throw out bearing will be noisy if you have your foot off the clutch, push it in, the noise goes away.... i think. I don't think
i've ever had a completley silent throw out bearing... Always new ones. i think it probably amplifies the sound because of the way the gearbox is
mounted. My kombi box was as noisy as hell, but i couldn't kill it!

Sorry Chris, sounds like main shaft bearing in box to me. Not throwout, they will start thr noise as soon as the bearing contacts the running ring.
Clutch in, goes away, clutch out, noise, worse cold on initial start up.

Other way around, the throw out bearing is only spinning when you have your foot on the clutch.
Agree with Matt, sounds like the main shaft bearing if it's doing it in all gears as well as neutral.
Silly question but did you check or change the oil before you started driving it?

yea its got fresh hypoid gear oil :P, filled till the fill hole.
ah well... will just drive and see how long it lasts i guess lol.
the idea of it being a bearing inside doesn't sound very good at all!
I guess a kombi 3 rib lucky dip at $100 a pop would be the solution if it eventually becomes a problem.

OUt of curiosity, later down the track what can i expect to happen to this 'dog' () box if i keep driving?
I haven't taken it for a very long drive, i guess i will just play it by ear.

It'll get worse, how quickly is the point. Really depends on the failure, can be weeks or years, so suck it and see. It'll tell you every startup
how it's going. The worse the bearing gets, the more damage occurs to other components from contaminants and the two shafts getting further apart
causes the gears to wear excessively.
