normal.I seem to think that the carby is running extremely rich.Would anyone be able to point me in the right directions as to how to reduce mixture

Thanks in advance.

Make sure the choke is getting power and isn't stuck and is fully open after about 5 mins of running.
If there's no power to the choke it will stay shut unless it's jammed open

be aware that when turning the small air fuel mixture screw (if its 34 pict)... its an air bypass screw. such that ccw (winding it out) doesn't
actually make it rich, it leans it out! and cw (winding in) makes it richer.
Course not relevant if stock 1600 with 31 pict.

any chance of a pic of Your carby Jas
check out ; http://www.vw-resource.com/
and check out tuning Your carburetor...
also check for fuel leaks...
mixture is supposed to be done with the engine hot...
My beetle always smells of petrol around the engine when I park it in My carport
no leaks... and goes fine..
