Sounds like it could be the starter solenoid. If it is, you can turn the ignition on and short across the main power terminal with a screwdriver to
start it. Not if you have a lowered car though (unless you jack it up).
Not a big job to replace from memory.

just had a whole new dizzy and starter put in not that long ago as it was running an aftermarket empi one in wich i had nothing but dramas with
my car is an auto type 3 notch if that helps at all, im thinking it may have something to do with the electric thing in the shifter (not sure what
its called but i figure that it tells the elecftrics if its in N before starting) there seems to be a couple loose wires in there wich i tried
plugging into the white box in wich all the others are plugged into, there was one free prong so i tried a couple combos then put it back as i found
it, hoping it aint the generator again

the ignition switch in air cooled VWs are very old and the electrical parts are corroded or burnt...
a new switch will fix the problem..
You can push a VW to start very easily...
two or more people even easier...
key ON and in 2nd gear....
let out clutch when you are moving along...
and press accelerator...
then the clutch and brakes to stop.. lol
or jack up the rear of the car and over the RHS axle the starter motor... put a BIHG screwdriver across the Large two threads out the back of the
solenoid..
You will get a few sparks...
get someone to push the accelerator and foot on the brakes
be careful

Chris make sure all your wires are plugged on to the starter solenoid on the starter motor, cause sometimes one will drop off if it has a loose
connection and no starty as you say ,or with being an auto it can be the neutral detent switch ,have you tried moving the shifter whilst turning the
key over as sometimes its just the switch needs adjusting to be sitting in the right spot

sorry I didn't see it was an auto...
so pushing it is out of the question...
seeing the starter has been fitted recently, a wire may have come off...
the same thing would happen if the neutral safety switch is disconnected...
so, it can be either thing...
using a screwdriver on the starter solenoid will start the engine whether its IN or OUT of gear so make sure its in neutral or Park.
cheers
Lee..

the black starter motor sits above the RHS rear axle...
a thick black cable is bolted to the solenoid...
along with other wire/wires

Yes,
I have to jack My auto beetle up , but I'm not quite a slim guy...lol I used to forget that My beetle had to be in neutral to start when I first
got it on the road..
and spent a bit of time under the starter motor.. lol
using the VW jack... with car in gear...

was told by a mate this morning that you can change the starter out for a faster torque one that will start first time every time, he fitted one to
his chevy many moons ago and highley recommends them, where would i find one for my type 3? he says it will be cheaper than a rebuild.....

Try Mick Motors
for a Hi Torque starter motor but the automatic starters are slightly more powerful than the manual starters..
they don't have the bush on the end..
the gear is on the end of the starter shaft...
a manual starter will NOT fit...
cheers
