Shitbox Rally 2012 - Team I Think We Can!
In April 2012, my good mate Danny Booby and myself will set off on an epic road trip to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Participants in the Shitbox Rally 2012 must drive from Melbourne to Cairns in eight days via outback roads, using a car that cost less than $1000 to
purchase and prepare. The rally is non-competitive, but each team must raise at least $4000 in sponsorship to participate. The cars are auctioned at
the end of the rally, rasing further funds.
Both members of team "I Think We Can" are in our late-30's and it's fair to say that our sporting glories have long past.
So what do you do when you want to make a difference, but can't walk up one flight of stairs without puffing?
You look at what talents you do have, that's what.
There is one thing we can do well, and this is fix (or more correctly, bodge up) cars. Add to that, we both like getting our hands dirty on old
machinery and the challenge of keeping it running.
Along comes the Shitbox rally, and it sounds like heaven to a couple of middle aged gearheads like us. A sanctioned excuse to tinker with an old car
and then head off on the road trip of a lifetime. The sort of trip we always said we would do, but never have.
There is a deeper side to this however and the main factor that forced us off our collective backsides.
The Cancer Council is a cause we feel very strongly about and that is why we ask you to sponsor us for our journey.
Both of us have lost friends and family to cancer and the vast majority of the Australian population would know someone who has had or is battling
this terrible disease.
The Cancel Council Australia provides funding for independent cancer research to help with detection, treatment and hopefully one day a cure. But more
than that, it also promotes awareness, prevention through education and provides support for cancer suffers and their families.
If by driving an old car from Melbourne to Cairns can contribute to this work in some small way, then we are proud to be a part of the Shitbox Rally
2012.
So please dig deep as we seek to raise money for the Cancer Council and attempt to have some fun at the same time.
Donations to our team can be made via the everyday hero website below.
