Webber IDF and IDA carbs


Hi There,
I'm curious, what the difference is with IDF and IDA carbs and which is the better of the two??
Looking at a new set for christmas..!

Here is the blind leading the blind...

I believe that IDFs have a better idle circuit and are therefore easier to live with every day and make more progressive power.

IDAs are more rough at lower revs, but I believe that outright they make more power than IDFs. Or more precisely, when matched with an appropriate camshaft and lifter combo, will make more power.

Therefore for any racing (drag or circuit) where revs will remain high and idle smoothness is not important, IDAs are the best option.

There are obviously those who are more than happy to live with IDAs on a street machine however.

Whilst IDAs in of themselves may not drink more petrol, when set up with the appropriate engine components to obtain the optimum performance, they can drink like a fish.

IDFs come in 36,40,44 and 48mm

IDAs come in 48 and 51's (??)

Generaly speaking IDA = big

General rule I've heard in a few places is 1600-1800, use 40's.... 1800-2000, go 44's and for 2000+ go 48's... and then go different size venturi's to fine tune to heads, cam etc.

What sort of motor?...capacity etc..Im getting built a 1916cc motor built at the moment for my wifes street bug and only running a set of 40mm IDFs with 40mm valves in her motor theres no point running 44-48mm carbies...besides losing airspeed and low down torque..speak to an engine builder I would suggest.

Hey Sides, I have had 40 dell's 32vents and they work fine. I am going to put them on to my 1600 street beetle and i'm wanting a new set for the drag bug.
1776cc, engle130 cam. I want to get the biggest carb possible incase i upgrade in the future. Probabliy best to go with 44idf.

You won't get a bigger carb than the one in Mr. Mezz's 2nd pic above, about 600mm high I'd guestimate. :lol:
