Fu+#ing insurance companies!!!

What is the point of house insurance when as soon as something happens they will try whatever they can not to pay out! We had a pipe burst in a wall in one of our bathrooms and went unoticed until the carpet in our bedroom was soaked so obviously not a self inflicted scam. The plumber we called then basically had to destroy the bathroom to find the source of the leak, well that was about 6 weeks ago. Two weeks later the Loss adjuster decided to turn up and now the insurance company RACQ say they are not paying for anything:grind: This is not the end as I am going to contact the ombudsman or whoever as this sort of thing really pisses me off as they are quick enough to take our money every year with all the great promises and TV ads. Does Shannons do house insurance 'cos after all this is sorted I certainly will not use RACQ again for anything and will let everyone I know the same.

not sure whether shannons do house insurance..

You need to read every word in their disclosure booklets these days as they are trying to get out of paying anything..

similar to all the new car insurance companies who want people who own their own home etc and never had a claim etc etc..

they all want our money....

Shannons DO house insurance, and will do a special deal if you have your car/cars insured with them.

That is not good news Barry! As others have said, Shannons do house insurance including special deals for the contents of your garage including tools, equipment and car parts etc.

RACQ do not get anyy of my money anymore. I find the only thing they are good for is a free tow. Mind you the price u pay for membership would pay for theh once in a blue moon tow I need. I have had family members with bad experiences before.

Hope you get it sorted.

Yeap,

Shannons gave us a quote today for contents (we are renting) and they have a section for $10k for garage tools etc that comes at no extra charge as they know 'enthusiasts' have collections fo tools and parts in our sheds
Damn good figures too - about as much as our four car + motorbike cost per month - very good as far as I am concerned.

They should send you a formal denial letter.
Then you go to the ombudsman after that.
Section 76 of the insurance contracts act will help here.
PM me if you need any advice, I am a loss adjuster.

Not knowing the exact circumstances I can only assume what is going on with the repairs, as I have been in the building industry all my working life there are a couple of things here that interest me,
1. Why did he have to destroy the bathroom to find a leak? I have had a leaking pipe in my own bathroom and found it very easily without touching the bathroom at all
2. How old is the house?
3. What was the exact problem with the pipe?
4. Was the offending pipe in an internal wall of the house or an external wall?

As a builder that has done a LOT of maintenance & repair work over the years, I wondered the same thing.

You don't have any photos do you?

The house is 25 years old and the pipes are plastic. There were three pipes that were leaking. The plumber had to remove the bath as one leak that had been going for some time had started to rot the timber supports for the bath, another one had leaked behind the vanity and the vanity being made of mdf practically fell apart but the one that had got our attention which had leaked in the wall between the shower and our bedroom and had seeped through the base of the wall and saturated our carpet. We are more than happy to pay for all the pipes to be changed over to copper and have been quoted $1600 to have it done but my gripe is that this is so obviously an accident rather than us trying to scam the insurance company and everything is there for the insurance company to see but they treated my wife like a bloody criminal on the phone. If I was still working at a resort and someone paid to stay in a certain room there is no way I could turn to the customer when they turned up and tell them "Hey I know you've paid for a room but we had a think about it and I'm sorry to say you can't stay here, we'll keep your money though!" cos that's exactly what RACQ have done. BTW Birdman I may have to take you up on your offer.

Did the leak (s) appear at the "plastic" pipe joints, they are probably compresion fittings, if so I'd check to see if the guarantee is still valid, they should last a lot longer than 25 years, BTW, copper isn't the be all end all solution, the leak in my own home was in a copper pipe.

Normally, the insurance company wont pay for the repairs to the pipes, but they do normally pay for the damage caused by the leak and possibly damage caused in the search for the leak.

I do think you should chase it.

X2
but if the joints failed you also have a claim on the builder / plumber / materials supplier (pipes), but not on your insurance I would think

Sorry but that's bullshit. You can 100% insure with IAG companies without a mobile number. What sort of company would insist on a stupid rule such as that? They do however try and collect one. If you were told that the staff member was lying to you and you should ask to speak to a manager.
