How to remove molding from early beetle?
How do I remove the chrome molding strips on an early beetle without damaging them?

Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...

The safest way is to tap the back of the clips from the inside [gently]. Front 1/4 panels are easy to get at, but door and rear 1/4 trim cards will
need to be removed first.
The moulds can be levered off without hitting from behind, if care is taken not to bend them, and not to scratch the paint. They all 'push' in - no
nuts behind.
Running board clips must be twisted so that the moulds can be removed.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

You aren't referring to the beetle in Your avatar?
which is a late beetle with plastic push in clips..
narrow strip... alloy or stainless steel..
the early metal clips... are easy to push in... lol
usually wide stainless steel strips...
but if the clips fingers get bent....
YIKES... can be difficult to get out...
best to push out from the back as suggested..

i use a paint scraper under the trim and close to the clip
but if you can get to the back of them as per above makes it easier
