what Aftermarket Steering wheel - 74 super
Hi all,
What is the best after market steering wheel to fit to my 74 super, and that clears the speedo.??

On Non super beetles, the steering wheels usually are too close to the blinker switch...
so, You may have that problem also...
Joel, on here has a 1303 L super with an aftermarket wheel,
He should be able to tell You what fits..
You may need to measure Your steering shaft as they did change size in later years..
the steering wheel boss, that the wheel bolts too, all seem too short, unless the steering wheel is really dished...
like they used to be many years ago...

if you buy a flat wheel you can fit a spacer between the boss and the wheel so it clears the indicator arm, you can buy these on line, i have a momo
prototipi in both of my cars, i wanted to have the wheel as far away as possible so i shortened the indicator arm so it cleared the wheel, you just
use your fingers as normal .

Yeah but he has a 1974 Super. He wont need a spacer, Just go to Auto Barn and pick a steering wheel you like and they have boss kits for bugs.

I dont believe there is any "sports" steering wheels that willlet you see the speedo
That is the smaller diameter ones will cut the view off of the top of the speedo.
To some degree, if you lower your seating position if you fit aftermatket seats this will help.
If you have the later 3 point seats this is really hard.
Steve Carter (1303steve) put an offset?? wheel with a flat bottom
This also helps.

I have a 350mm momo wheel and can't see the top half of the speedo. I have after market seatsvwhich are lower, with the stock seats it wasveve worse.
But it will depend on your height, seat, wheel.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

I have an Autotechnica Steering Wheel on mine and yes you do have trouble reading the speedo but you soon learn were the needle should roughly be, if
the needle is down lower it chugs when you try to take off, if its to far above, it sets of red and blue flashing lights in your mirror easy as far as
the indivator goes there is plenty of clearance

Have a look on the MOMO website, they do have a couple of wheels with an offset hub so the wheel sits abit higher in the straight ahead position.
Another reason I went for a digital head up display on the windscreen 
My seats are a fair bit lower than stock so it's less of an issue with a 350mm wheel
If you're lucky a handful of aftermarket wheels are availble in 380mm, that little bit extra makes all the difference.

make sure you get the right boss kit.. i had trouble getting the smaller size to fit my L bug.

Hi
I used a flat bottom 350 mm Momo Course wheel on my sons bug and my bug, it has a flat bottom and is a really nice wheel.
You cant really see the stock speedo unless you duck down, on my sons bug I fitted a digital speedo, a better idea is the HUD unit shown in Joels
photo.

I had a 73 1303 in a past life and found it ha to get a long enough boss to clear the indicator stalk. Believe it or not, the aluminum alloy that the
indicator stalks are made from in supers can be heated and bent with a cigarette lighter.
I didn't do this myself (was freaking about snapping it) but I let a local vw shop do it for me and it worked well.
Love that mono protoipi wheel, that looks great

Thanks a million people, My 74 super will keep her standard wheel, I am in the proses of fitting a gen uine leather wrap onto it which looks very good if I my say so and thickens up the feel,
