Certificate of Identity
I stumbled upon this through Facebook and thought that some people might be interested.
Its basically if you would like to know more about its history, order our Vehicle Identity Certificate for a fee of only 50 euros.
This is all done by the Volkswagon AutoMuseum in Germany
http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/urkunden.html?&L=1
Personally I like to think of it as a bit of history to go with the car.

They are useless for Australian VWs.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Yep, they just don't have the correct details,
I ordered one and it came back as the wrong year, wrong color and to top it off the wrong model?
Waste of time unless your vehicle was made in Germany.

Yes they are a waste of money. Wolfsburg Museum has no details of Australian-built Volkswagens at all - what chassis numbers were assigned here, what
paint colours or trim combinations were used. These Australian records were lost when the Melbourne factory changed ownership in 1968.
If you are lucky, your 1955-64 or '68-76 VW will come back as 'delivered to Fiji' with no paint or trim details available. '65-67 will probably
say 'number not known' as Wolfsburg does not know about the Australian 19ynnnnnn chassis numbers.
However, if you own a post-'77 fully imported German Golf or Passat, go right ahead.

What about a 69 semi auto?
There made in germany but have a 119 chassis number.
Could you get an accurate cert for one of these?

Not Australian-delivered; Australian-MADE. German-made Australian-delivered VWs, such as the '68-70 semi-autos, Karmann Ghias, deluxe Microbuses,
1600TS fastbacks, and everything from '77-on, will be OK. So yes, a 1500 semi-auto should be OK. But I think the later semi-auto Supers were
assembled here so the certificates probably won't work for them.
It's only the Australian assembled and Australian-manufactured cars that are the problem - 99.9% of everything sold here until 1977. That includes
Type 3s and Kombis of course, that were also made here. Not to mention Country Buggies...
The Aussie assembled manual Beetles made after 1968 also had a 11y chassis number; but these came as part of the German CKD kits. I believe Wolfsburg
allocated these numbers as part of the kit, so the factory will be aware of them, but they will NOT know the cars' delivery details, or paint or
trim, which were done in Melbourne.
At the other end, I don't know how NEW your VW can be to take advantage of this certificate thing. I wonder if it would work for an imported 1980
Golf diesel? Or a mid-'80s T3 Kombi? Or one of the '90-'92 Mk2 GTIs? I'm not really interested enough to pay 50 Euro to see if works for my 1995
Mk3 Golf GL. But surely the system would break down in recent times, when our VWs are now sourced from all over the world - Mexico, South Africa,
Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Poland, Argentina. The Polo Classic of the early 2000s came from China!

There are no Australian '92 GTIs (only 1990)

Surely TKM didn't try to sell 1990 models as new ones in 1992, when they were still being advertised? (although they were 'model runout ads)?
True, I was thinking of when they were sold here, not their German model years.

There were 2 shipments during 1990 a few months apart. That was all.
Give us your Golf 3 VIN Phil and I'll tell you the build date. The Aussie build date plate and the compliance have nothing to do with the actual
manufacture date.
