My beetle had been sitting for 16 years. All the wheel bearings were as good as new, just the seals had gone hard. Seals are only about $4 each. Engines ? You get what you pay for. Regards Gordon

If it has been sitting for ten years, you would be wise to at least check, regrease and adjust all wheel bearings, and change brake fluid and check and adjust all brakes. Then check and grease the steering and suspension.

Drain fuel tank, new battery.

Is the engine a 1600? if so you should be able to get a minor rebuild on the engine if it just needs heads, barrels and pistons.

If it is a Type4 engine 1700, 1800, 2000, then you will be up for thousands on a rebuild, or $1000 for a reasonable second hand engine. I sold our 1800 engine out of our bus for $1500.

Depends where it has been sitting as well, if it has been somewhere dry and undercover it shouldnt deteriorate too much.

I'd replace all brakes inc flex lines booster line (depending year) calipers , master cyl , cv boots , shocks , tyres ,check n repack or replace bearings n seals , put $2 grand aside to cover this as you will always find something else like batt and headlights , lenses to replace. .. list goes on and on... $$$.. but worth it ..busses kick ass ..carry more crap ,sleep in it .look sweet lowered and handle pretty good for a building

8 seater 2 litre. It would be late 70's. Should have 2 litre gearbox too.

In my opinion a perfect bus to put a Subaru motor in. Already has a strong box and disc brakes etc. I put a Suby EJ22 in our bus, and being a later bus, the engineer signed it off easily, as it already had 2 speed wipers, 2 speed demister, dual circuit boosted disc brakes etc.

Check my build thread here

Do you already have a daily driver car? How much longer left on your P's? Maybe you could do the engine conversion over that time, and then as soon as you are off your P's you will have it finished, engineer mod plated and rego ready to go.

yeah i have a car that i drive prett much all the time a 1816 oval but just kinda looking for something thats more suitable for a daily driver and cheaper on fuel

and i wanted to fix up the my oval and cut out the lil bit of rust and a new paint job and new interior

i think i have one 6 months on my green p plates but i have a feeling its longer then and yeah i also thought of that helbus

and how hard was it todo the conversion and was it costly?

The build thread has all the details. I can say it was not hard, but that does not mean someone else will find it easy. You would be wise to budget $7000 to do the conversion using a non turbo engine, about $1000 more if doing turbo, because you have to consider the extra exhaust work etc.

Our twin carb 1800 VW engine and the Subaru EJ22 use about the same amount of fuel, but changed from 80hp VW to 135hp Suby.

wow thats a fair chunk of change but the skys the limit i might just stick with a stock engine if i do get it but i also want it so i can just pack up the rods and drinks with a mattress in the back and just go away for the weekend if you no what i mean
