with most of the WPVW cars nearly ready for saturday , it is all hands on deck with my son Deans 69' beetle . Just a few days ago it developed a
noise in the transmission that resembled a chocolate wheel at a chook raffle ......
We pulled the engine and tranny from his bug , stripped the tranny to find nearly every tooth on the pinion cracked and several chipped .
The crownwheel & pinion have been replaced and the tranny reassembled yesterday / last night . Today Dean assembled the axle assemblies , brakes
etc and the tranny has been reinstalled tonight .
With the addition to the tranny , Deans bug also received new insulated tranny strap kit to hold everything in place , a new 4-spider gear supa-diff ,
a new 4-puk iron disc , removal of both front & rear swaybars (which saved 9.2 kilos) and as I write this Ben Ford is assisting Dean in
disassembly of the left front suspension assembly to locate a problem that is causing excessive movement in the LH lower trailing arm .

Sorry, no control over the gates at Sydney - they're locked at 8pm. This does exclude those staying at the track from the Pizza night, but the gate
times and conditions were outlined early in the piece.

well I didn't have time to take any pics over the last hour while Ben , Dean & me stripped his front beam , replaced both lower outer front beam
bearings with new genuine VW Germany ones , replaced both lower trailing arms & fitted 2 new lower balljoints .
Deans front end is now all back together and he will have to do a wheel alignment tomorrow as I am buggered and about to head home for the night .

Gate will probably be open a fair bit later. The Board is having a meeting regarding the costs of the track and what it will take to survive on Friday
night, starting at 7:30pm.

Hi All,
An incredible day of VW drag racing - that pretty much says it all. Congratulations to drivers, crew and spectators for putting on a great show and
confirming that VW drag racing is a vibrant part of the Australian drag racing scene.
My thanks to goes to Mick Motors for their ongoing backing of the series, Rod Penrose Performance, Volkswagen Genuine Parts, Westside Mufflers,
Yokohama, Wayne Penrose Volkswagen, EuroAutomotive, Harding Performance, and Das Resto Parts for their support, Ray Treasure, Joseph Rodriquez,
Matthew Sherwood and the Sydney Dragway for their efforts and encouragement, and to my VWMA crew over the four days of traveling and running the show
- Grahame Rumballe, Aaron Roberts, Ian & Christine Dalgliesh, Jessica Miller and Christopher McGaughey. Also to Andrew Parish for the trophy
design, Darren and Shane Hobson for the unique Top VW Shootout commemorative number plates (if you left before getting yours please email me) and Ian
and Rose Merrett for the RT prize money.
The programme for the day ran well, and now that I have a better understanding of the facility and the procedures, I can modify any future events at
Sydney to streamline scutineering, introduce a bit more qualifying time, and sort a few minor competition glitches. There was also a lack of time to
run the RC racing, but that will be addressed and definitely included next year, as well as greater promotion of the evening entertainment. Overall,
though, I couldn't have hoped for a better racing outcome.
Personally, I did get to play, which gave me a chance to put the helmet on and drown out the routine of running the event, if only for a short time.
The Fvee with a Weber DCNF 40 ran a best of 13.7@106mph over one run, and then I jumped into the buggy for two rounds of competition. Aaron Roberts
and I spent the better part of a month sorting what will become a nice little drag car. Handling issues aside (wheelstanding 1st and 2nd with
attitude!) Aaron managed a flat 12 second pass in the last round. Once we get on top of the suspension and steering, the normally aspirated 2332cc in
a 580 kg with driver frame should post high 11s!
A full report with results, images, pizza night coverage, show'n'shine, etc will be in the May issue of VWMA, the magazine that makes this all
possible.
VW Warwick is on the weekend of September 29-30th. As Sydney now leads the way with entrants (94), Warwick will be pulling out all stops to take back
the crown.
See you on the track!
Cheers
Craig Hughes
