High pitch pulsing squeak from engine
As the title says
Coming from the right side of the engine
It's a 1300 single for in my beetle
Engine is otherwise in good nick, was rebuild about 6 years ago and hardly driven
I've checked all the engine tin to see if that was squeaking, but it isn't. And as it increases with revs and kind of pulses, I'm thinking it's
probably mechanical
Any ideas???
It's driving me nuts!!!

I wouldnt describe pining as a "high pitch pulsing squeak"
Not the fan is it??
Try taking off the fan belt and fire it up and see if you can still hear it

I did a bit of research, I don't think it's pinging, doesn't that sound more clunky??
It sounds like sheet metal on sheet metal squeaking, but it increases with the revs
I've pushed and pulled on everything while the car is running, but the sound doesn't come or go, it stays the same, just a pulsing squeak squeak
squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak

If it's a whistle type of squeek , I'd go with inlet manifold leak at the head or carby, or even loose head.....

I suppose more of a metallic rattle than squeak.
Not an exhaust leak??

It ain't the pulleys, sound is coming from below there
And you can still heard it well from under the car
Also I can't feel any exhaust leaks
I'm hoping it's some tin work loose and not engine internals
I'll re check the tin tomorrow

I'm with Matt - describing it as pulsing sounds like an intake leak to me.
Won't be an exhaust leak... they give a boom'y sort of phutt sound... make the engine sound like a tractor.
Check the intake manifold is tight to the head, and that the head studs are all tight.

ok - if it is a "choofing" sound it may be a cracked head.
I had this the other day
Pull the sparkplugs and see if there is a "V" black mark
This was causred by a crack in the sparkplug thread

There's your problem - it is the brake drums skidding on the road when you downchange.

But it's the best way to lower a beetle, roll on the drums!!!!
I'm gonna do the garden hose stethoscope trick tonight, fingers crossed it a dodgy intake gasket, I don't want a leaky head!!

Ok so I just did the garden hose stethoscope trick, didn't find anything but a couple of small exhaust leaks( empi gt stainless) but these were
making more of a dull chugging sound, they didn't sound chirpy like crickets. I'm gonna fix those leaks but I don't think they are making the
chirp.
Also no intake leaks, checked them with the hose and sprayed some starter fluid around, nothing
Couldn't find the noise anywhere around the head either.
Anybody have any suggestions?? Its driving me crazy!!!
Also, stupid question, but as this is my first vw, I don't really know.... But this chirpping cricket noise isn't a characteristic noise for these
engines is it???? It's a 1300sp
Cheers

Oh and I pulled the plug leads individually while the car is running, and the noise remained, so I seriously doubt it's engine internals

I had a problem like this that had me stumped for ages. In the end it was the pushrod for the fuel pump that was wrong. I had a replacement pump that
I thought was for a generator, but was actually for an alternator. The pushrod needs to be changed to suit and because it was a bit too long it cause
a metal on metal squeak. Thats why the squeak became faster as rpm rose.
Cheers
Steve

Good option! I'll look into that
Also just noticed that the flanges on my stainless empi exhaust aren't welded all the way around the pipe, just tacked!!! There is definite carbon
deposits on the outside, I'll weld that up, see if that's the mystery chirpy bird
