1945 SEDANS- IMPORTED INTO AUSTRALIA 1947

Many of the VW publications indicate that two 1945 VW Sedans were brought into Australia by the Australian Government for testing and evaluation. The cars arrived on different ships in 1947 and were handed over to Department of Munitions to undergo the various testing. A large supply of spare parts were also delivered.
In December 1948 the Commonwealth Disposals Commission decided that both cars and the spare parts would be sold at public auction and on the 24th February 1949 the auction was undertaken. The cars sold for 580 pounds ( Type 51 Sedan with Kubel running gear) and 470 pounds (Type 11 Sedan).

One of these cars is now being restored in Adelaide ( Type 51) and I have managed to locate a lot of the history of this vehicle starting with the family of the original purchaser at the 1949 Auction.
The ongoing question is what ever happened to the second vehicle ( Type 11 Sedan). It was sold to a person named Smith at the Auction bu there is no further information available.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THESE TWO VEHICLES,PARTICULARLY THE TYPE 11, WHETHER IT BE FACT OR HERESAY.
ANY CLUES OR INFORMATION COULD PRODUCE A THREAD THAT MAY ASSIST ME WITH MY RESEARCH.
I LIKE WILD GOOSE CHASES BUT THIS RESEARCH GOES TO DEVELOPING THE HISTORY OF THE EARLIEST SEDANS IMPORTED INTO AUSTRALIA.
PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA EMAIL OR PM IF YOU CAN HELP.

here in WA the car museum says the oldest vw in Oz is (was) a gray 1946 bug. brought over by a german woman who partner was in the german army. VW Australia held a competition to find the oldest VW and this was the one that was found. i'm guessing the two you are talking about have disappeared.

so Bill reckons that they BOTH havn't dissapeared.
If the museum that you are refering to is the one in York then I wouldn't place too much cred on the information from there, I visited it last year and while I found it very interesting there was a couple of mistakes I found and am certain of but the owner just didn't want to know .:no:

Just trying to get this straight, Bill....are you happy that the car being restored in Adelaide is the real thing? And that leaves one 'missing' then.....the 'Smith' car [don't take any notice of Johnny N.F., you're bigger than him:smilegrin:] is yet to be found? The WA car is not related to this?

Cheers,

Greg

The Sedan being restored in Adelaide is the real thing. Chassis number has been confirmed with Wolfsburg although it now has an 1946 engine number. I have 90% the history of this car after the sale by public auction.

This leaves the history of the"Smith" car still to be located and despite Johnny No Fingers assistance the initial for Mr Smith is "C". But that does not help much either.

I have confirmed that the WA vehicle in the York Museum is not the "Smith" car as I have spoken with the the daughter in law of Ted Haenel who confirms how the car arrived in Australia.

I AM STILL OPEN TO ALL FANCIFUL SUGGESTIONS OR HERESAY in my efforts to locate the history of the "C.Smith" vehicle.

Dave,

Yep, this is the Adelaide car that was purchased by the current SA owner from Graham Lees.
It came from French island, Victoria, to the mainland in the early 70s by a guy I know from the Mallee in Victoria. It sat there for 10 years and was then onsold to a guy who flicked it after a couple of months to Graham.

The saga goes on and on.

There was a very early split that lived in a Shell garage at Sutherland in the 1970s. Steve Carter may know about it.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Hi

Long story, I will try to make it short, this is most likely not the same car.

In the 70s I used to work for Automotive Imports, part of the VW dealer in Liverpool called Provincial Motors. I was a sales rep for them and visited many VW workshops. The was a VW workshop on the corner of the Princes highway and President avenue at Sutherland, its now a fruit barn I think.

In one of the bays sat very dusty split window Beetle, I used to regularly pester the owner of the split to sell it to me.

I lost track of this car until a few years ago when talking to club member who actually bought the split window from him in 1977, he was an ex policeman, I told him of my almost connection with car, when the club members health began to fail he offered to sell it to me, I had nowhere to store the car so I had to pass it up.

The car didn't appear to have any tags on it and I was told that it had a Kubel chassis under it. Some photos he sent to me when he was selling the car.

Steve

what sort of money was it worth back then Steve?

I went to that Museum in York last Tuesday to check that car out. They have it marked as the oldest VW in Aus. and a 1946 model. It has had a few body repairs with obvious areas having some "bog" in them.It is RH drive with the speedo in the LH dash pressing and the other with the logo pressed into it hasn't been cut out.It has no crutch coolers and couldn't see if it had the relief cut into the front windows. It had the Kubel/Country Buggy steering wheel.Definately a valuable find.I would have liked to be able to open it up-but the old Bloke in charge wasn't in a good mood that day.

Great work as usual Bill.

The car in the York Museum is the Hanael car, privately imported by immigrant Therese Hanael in 1951. It was the result of VWA's search for the 'oldest VW in Australia' in 1961, when they were celebrating the 100,000th Australian VW. The Hanaels were presented with the 100,000th VW at a ceremony at Clayton, in exchange for their '46. VW Australia used the Hanael's '46 for promotion for a few years until it wa sold in the early 1980s. It was then owned by Green's Motorcade at Leppington, then Gilltrap's museum on the Gold Coast, before the York Museum bought it in the mid-'80s. It used to be black but at some stage it was damaged, and LNC Industries repsrayed it in blue/grey as it is today.

It's not one of the two cars Bill is talking about, that were imported by the Australian Army even earlier than the Hanaels', and auctioned in 1949. The fact that VW Australia couldn't find the two Army Beetles in 1961, when they were deliberately and extensively looking for the 'oldest' Beetles, shows they had already dropped off the radar.

Bill I have copies of VWA's press releases from 1961 - let me know if you want scans. But they won't help looking for the Type 11 Army VW.

Would the War Memorial's archives be of any assistance? I have also wondered whether their Kubelwagen really came in at the same time, or if not what it's history really was.

Here's another Australian VW history project for you Bill, once you find the Smith VW - whatever happened to Melbourne journalist, driver, businessman and VW dealer Laurie Whitehead, and more specifically, the VW he drove to win the 1955 Redex Trial? I know he was a VW dealer in St Kilda until the mid-'60s; he also won the 1957 Mobilgas. The '55 Redex car would be a significant historical find. I wonder whether his family could be located? I also wonder whether the Perkins family still has any Redex/Mobilgas cars or components - Eddie (Larry's Dad) must have passed on by now.

Bill, it seems to me that the missing '45 Beetle needs a name. The 'C.Smith' car or 'Army' car etc. doesn't have much character......how about the 'WILD GOOSE'?

I always thought if was from king Island or flinders Island and not french Island.
Having said that I know a few people that had told me about a split beetle on french Island as it not far from where I live.
I did see pictures of the car a few years ago and it needed a lot of love. Would be a great project.

Nathan,
Yes, I had a little smile when I saw how close French Island was to where you live.
I have heard that Bob Prentergast ex Imported Car Wreckers of Springvale may have owned the Split Beetle that was on French Island around the early 1970's
Bob passed away some years ago- can any one add more to this ????

There are still no leads on the "Wild Goose" vehicle.
