Best type of gearbox
Now that I'm getting closer to the power I want out of my baja, the next step is the gearbox as I know this is now going to be the next weak link!
Any advice/thoughts on what the best type is to start with?
Happy to do a rebuild, but I'd ideally like to be rebuilding something that's relatively strong!
Swing arm rear end and I"m not keen on doing the change to IRS so is there a good bow to work with. Some sort of Kombi box perhaps?
Many thanks, Marc.

Pretty sure the later, stronger kombi boxes are all IRS but it does depend if you have a case where both sides of the diff had the plates bolt on.
Then you can swap a swing diff into the IRS box.
How much BHP or you gonna have? Dangerous on here is great at box building from what I've read. Drop him a PM maybe?
2L kombi cases are the strongest case to start with from what I gleaned whilst researching.

All of the later IRS Kombi boxes don't have side covers at all. So you are unable to swap a swingaxle diff into them.
The early split Kombi boxes are all reduction hub. I'm not sure that you want to go down the path of redux boxes on not. Plus finding a set is
getting quite difficult.
The strongest swingaxle gearbox will be out of the later model standard (not superbug) Beetle. They have high gear ratios though so might not be
suited for your application.
Dave might be able to build you a box to suit but that depends on the moola that you have available.
We probably need a bit more information before we can give you some better answers.
What height rear tyre are you going to be running on your Baja?
What size engine and how much horsepowere are you wanting to feed through the box?
And what are you using the car for? Highway flyer, slow rock crawling offroad? Or something in between?
