tyre sizing???
hi all! Just wondering if anyone may be able to help?
im in the build of a ej20tt with 091 box into a 1969 beetle, have 944 alloy arms and hubs ( 2" wider'ish per side than standard) and just wondering
what a good width size would be. im looking at (front) 205/45/17 and (rear) 235/45/18
its going to be a every day driver and dont want to go to wide as ill loose traction, yet with the extra 60kg odd in the rear dont know if i should go
245's or cut back to 215. ( just trying to get the car set up during the build so i have all clearences and most of all keep the sump off the ground
(which is why im going 18" for that extra 12.5mm) any info would be much appreciated

Hi
What size are your rims?
You can only legally go 15 mm + or - in tyre height, a 155 SRx15 is a standard tyre at 25.1 inch or 637.5 mm
The 205/45/17 is 614 mm and the 235/45/18 are 646 mm.
You must be careful with tyre sizing otherwise you risk the Tonka toy look.

didnt really think to much of overall Diameter and what was legal. i always thought that as long as you didnt go over 2" larger rim size, and lower
tyre profile you were fine.
i havent as yet got any rims for the car yet, but plan to once funds allow. I wanted to know what a good size was / or largest Diameter i could go
and a width of what handles best, yet not to wide / narrow for a every day driver. this way i wasn't rushing out getting what i thought may work then
have it all go sour in my face when the setup didnt work. Thought i would get some food for thought.
so that puts me onto 205/50/17 (636.8) and 215/50/17 (646.8) tyres as from a focus / or mazda3.
so would thies widths handle with the weight of a beete?

Hi
Have you talked to an engineer yet?
For your model car its the finished weight that determines the wheel sizing, I'm guessing your car will come in at about 800 - 1000 kgs so a 7 inch
wheel is the maximum.

I was talking to an engineer some time ago when the adr's changed and he said may biggest issues were mainly going to be the firewall and the forced
induction capacity to weight ratio. So i downloaded the adr's and printed them, but havent read the booklet for some ime now, and i guess its time
for a refresher again before i make a huge mistake by the looks. i have to change engineer now though because who i was useing no longer dows it as he
said there is to much crap that comes along with it and he now only does repairs and blueslips. ( ill have a look at the ADR's again, give my self a
refresher course and start talking to a different engineer. Thanks again steve

I will stand corrected, but I think the closest engineer that will do it is Collins & Associates in Taree. They have been doing the engineering
inspections on the project I have been working on it Taree, and talking to Sam, he was telling me they are doing lots of vehicle inspections - he
certainly seems to know what he is talking about. He is very thourough, but very helpfull and a hell of a nice bloke. Their details are 'Collins

Also when making the tyre choice you should look at the tyre manufacturers website as they are meant to give tech details as the the rim widths tyre
widths and profiles can be fitted too. This is to make sure the tyre sits properly within the rims beading and has far less chance of becoming
unseated during hard cornering conditions. if a tyre looks like a balloon or stretched on a rim then it is very likely not meant for the width rim
it's fitted to.

thanks, all. ill head over to see them today or tomorrow on my way to work. I started out using mick moony, but he gave up engineering about 6 months
ago, and I hadnt dont anything on my toy for about 9 odd till now and lost my adr booklet i printed out 
Ill look into the tyre design choose the tyre, find the right offset and rim to suit the tyre. ride, handling and practicality are my main objectives
in the build. ( just have to sort out my front spindels @ lennerengineering now)
sorry to say joel, but never really liked the look of a 6" tyre on a 8" rim, and i know id roll it off the rim on the first hard corner ( i like
corners) plus is that even legal?

im running 2" wider guards all round, ( been some time eithor 2 or 2.5") i didnt want to narrow the front beem and i wanted to make the car wider on
the road to help handleing. ( rear track is about 2" per side wider than standard, and front im guessing will be 1-1.5" per side once machining is
compleated)
