Engine size?
Hi all, I've just bought a 64 Beetle and want to know what size engine I'm running. Is it a 1200, 1300, 1500.......How can I tell? Are there
markings I should be looking for on the engine somewhere?
Thanks

Well it's definately not 1200, got the wrong heads and manifold
Having a twin throat DCN weber on it would be atleast 1500 or 1600.
Engine number under the generator stand will tell you what it started life as but doesnt mean anything until you pull it down.

Single port could be 1300 or 1500, more likely 1300

Tell us the engine number.
It's on the casing, below the generator pulley.
If the engine is stock, that should answer the question.

We have a d code engine in a real og standard at work that's a 1200 except that it has twin port heads and a pict 30.It also seems that it has a 69
mm crank in it so engine numbers can be a little missleading sometimes.but it may well be a 1200,

'D' is indeed a late-model 1200 case, made from 1965-on. Earlier 1200 cases only used consecutive numbers with no leading letter (which is what your
'64 Beetle would have had when new). 1200 engines were fitted to Australian Deluxe Beetles until early 1966 (replaced by 1300cc engines after), and
the Standard Beetle until early 1967. They were available as Genuine Replacement parts for years afterwards, and in fact this engine case design and
numbering was made until 2003 overseas.
When new this engine would have had a 64 mm stroke crank and 77 mm cylinders, and single-port heads. But now, 45+ years later, it could have almost
anything.
