Alarm systems
i'm very close to getting some bits and pieces to start making my beetle look nice ( at the moment i have crappy torn seats and front seats from a
?volvo)
are you able to fit an alarm system to beetles? are there any you guys can recommend?
i don't really care for central locking but would like the car to make some noise if someone fiddles with the doors, engine bay, boot etc.
would you need to have electronic ignition to make it all happen also?

mate, you can fit them. its not hard. the only one i wouldnt recommend is brant. had one fitted and a week out of warranty, it shit itself on the way
to work. had to get towed.
rang them up, they said yes we will send someone out to look at it. next thing i know i was charged 700 bucks to fix a 500 buck alarm system. wasnt
even asked if i wanted to go ahead with the replacement was just done then charged to my credit card. not happy at all. if i was given the choice i
would of said rip it out instead, would of only cost me 100.
when i questioned was told too bad so sad, the work was done and now you have to pay it. when i asked what happened was told that it was spiked and
failed. this i questioned as the stereo i have fitted is still working fine and if there was a spike it would of killed both of them. its strange how
a hard wired system gets spiked while the car and other electrical gear thats hard wired in as well works fine.

Firstly No on the electronic ignition part.
I fitted a Rhino car alarm to My 68 beetle, and it works great.
It has the push button remotes and operates when a door or the bonnet is opened.. I have a switch on the engine lid but haven't connected the one on
the engine lid yet.
it also chirps when You turn it On or off along with the blinkers flashing..
The blinkers also flash a few times every time a door is opened
and 10 times if You leave a door open..
You can also fit a movement sensor to it...
Now although I have had the alarm fitted for years , I was always going to have the alarm horn inside the car, so if someone does open the door...
YIKES.... You would have to shut the door quickly... otherwise Your hearing would be impaired.. I was never game enough to do this even though
the alarm has NEVER ever gone off while I was in the car..
it still sounds the BEST place for the alarm horn speaker.. lol
would scare the pants off anyone PLUS there is NO practical way anyone with hearing could stay in the car or even hold the door open..
and the alarm keeps going for about 2 minutes
[when activated] time governed by Law..
it also can be connected to door remote switches..
You can buy alarms now that ring Your mobile if the car is touched...
also get a lockable engine lid...
cheers

Just an average run of the mill alarm is all you need.
I've had one in mine for 12 years now.
Its got triggers for doors, boot and decklid as well as shock sensor and glass breakage sensor and it remote controls central locking and remote boot
release and the usual immobilisor points.
But you could just hook up the door triggers and leave the rest.
Barls, was that alarm in your bug or in a mainstream car?

so if they fail there is no way to get the car moving?.. i suppose that's exactly why you buy them but still a little worrying if you are just trying to get home

Not normally, just Barls wasn't installed by him and alot of alarms have all black wiring so you can't tell what is what..
The Alarm in one of my other cars is the same, supposed to slow a would be car thief down.
But if you install it yourself or you know where the immobilisor relay is it's very easy to bypass.

Look at Ebay.co.uk. YOu can get a Toad Cat1 Thatcham approved alarm for $100 plus bit extra for postage. Comes with full fitting PDF, microwave
internal sensors and enough door contact wires to cover all Beetle doors, Bonnet and decklid.
Don't waste your money buying from an Oz vendor unless you want an alarm that the Oz insurers will give you a discount on you premium for.
madness is in the eye of the beholder
