Engine number mystery
This could be a newbie question. I have a 69 1500 that doesn't have the original engine in it. The engine has the serial number ad284429 which a few
different sources have told me means it's a 1600.
It is definitely single port though, so is it possible that someone has built a 1500 single port out of a used 1600 casing or that someone has stuck
single port heads on a 1600? Or stuck a 1500 inlet manifold on a 1600?
I didn't think the parts from these engines were that compatible. If anyone could shed some light on this I would be very grateful! I will try and
stick a photo up soon.

Nothing unusual about that, I've seen that combo a few times over the year as for a stockish engines it's combining the best of both worlds.
1500s had a pretty crap bottom end, case was weaker and only single relief.
The later twin port and dual relief ones are much better but the single port heads are better for longevity and supposedly torque but Ihazaskeptical,
they don't feel torquier.
Type1 VW engines are what I call lego engines, you can build almost any combo out of them cos the parts are all so compatible.

Thanks Joel, that solves that one for me. I am about to do the clutch and was going to replace the oil seal, I suppose that means I'll need one that
suits a 1600 then I suppose.
