1970 VW Beetle Restorer in SE Qld

G'day All,
Just new on the forum and am soaking up the info it's providing so thanks !!

I live in North Brisbane area and have a 1970 VW Beetle 1300. Been with the same owner for 40 years and mechanically pretty sound but body work and interior need some special love and care which I can't provide unfortunately. Short on technical knowledge and time !!

Can anybody in the know and living in the SE Qld area give me a name of good restoration shop that could help me out with a full body/ interior restore of good quality and fair price ?

You could give Al (Das Resto Haus on here) a try. He is on the Gold Coast.

Thanks Guys, have heard of these guys and appreciate your advice. This is a little way away from me (live in Caboolture) though I'd definately be willing to have a chat with them. Know of anybody closer ?

Cheers

Hey mate i live just near you but unfortunatly my old paint guy has retired...i think there are few places up the coast you could try for paint and panel if DAS is too far away. How bad is the body work.....much rust???
If your chasing carpet for interior and want quality send 1916baja a PM he does carpet kits which look really good.

I don't know about bodywork on that side of town but Nik at Outrage Motor Trimming did a real good job for us on the interior and he is not far from you.

His number is 0408 379 444.

Thanks heaps guys,

tar76, in answer to your questions, the car is originally from the Sunny Coast and from what inspections others have done I'm looking at probably replacing both front guards, both running boards, the front and back apron and at least the back section of the floor pan. Others have said that they can be repaired but I think the price of replacement parts doesn't make a 'fix' feasable. My thinking is that if I need to have thjose parts replaced I may as well go the whole hog and get a full bare metal repaint job done. I'm also a bit concerned that rust has got into the frame behind the front guard. There's also surface rust in a few places as well. Something that I wouldn't see as unexpected in a 40 yo car that hasn't had too much attention.

Thanks for the other contacts as well. Always good to have them.

Mate i''ll do a bit of asking around and see what i can come up with for paint and panel. Have you tried any around Morayfield/Caboolture?? My brother in law got a shop on Bribie to do his Kombi and they did not a bad job in the end.......but had to go back a few times and had to keep visiting and make sure they weren't taking any short cuts with the rust work which they tried!
You can buy replacment gear no worries, i would give DAS resto parts a call that way you'll be get the right gear.

Be careful thinking the new parts will just bolt on and fix all your problems. There is often plenty of time required in getting the new panels fitting and so repairing your old can be the more economical as they are already fitting (?).

^^^^ x 2

Also look for good used ones (or just better than the current ones) as they will probably also be better than new panels.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

You can see examples of our previous resto's on our gallery:
http://dasrestohaus.com.au/gallery2/main.php

I agree with the above advice about trying to repair original panels (or finding replacement used panels to rework) where possible. New guards and doors etc fit no where near as well as originals. Happy to chat if you want to call at any stage, otherwise I'm sure there are other shops closer to you - obviously having someone experienced with VW's will help.

Re. trimming we are lucky to have a few really great upholsterers in sth east qld - Willem from Platinum Trimming down here on the gold coast, Stuart from All Car Interiors at Enoggera (Matt could probably attest to the worksmanship from the volksrestore days), and Nick from Outrage.

All the best
Cheers
Al

Thanks Al, yes Stuart is good, but these days I take my car to Nick at Outrage, a true Volksie nut with a passion for quality. And he is VERY close to you.
