Street 2276 combo (now a Thickwall 2180)
Hi All
I'm hoping you guys and gals can assist with constructive input on my proposed street combo as I've been away from it all for a while:
82 crank (China), 5.5 rods (China), 94 b&pistons.
Had a chat with Damo a while back about cams, I was always going to run an Engle K8 (GB 310) with 1.4's but he outlined the V26 (GB 309) with 1.4's
was a more forgiving cam and still produced power.
I like to have the power right up to 7K so I guess I'm after something that wont tear the valvetrain apart!
I'll run the slotted berg lifters and straight cuts.
I was thinking Cb 42x37.5 Mini Wedge port heads or would the bigger ones work better?
48 dellortos mounted on the CB matched intakes.
Was thinking a sidewinder as it's going into a very low 62.
Gearbox will be a twin sideplate irs box converted to swing with superdiff.
Intention is to have a very quick weekend warrior and also be able to have some fun on the strip.
Worked for Jeff and Shimmo many years ago so hopefully can still remember how to put it all together properly!
What are your thoughts?

No pete I won't go easy on you!Firstly if your gonna use a chinese crank rods and pistons etc it's all gonna end in tears!build the biggest engine
you can afford with all parts being the equal or better than stock German.The berg 310 cam is a great "dune buggy"cam according to Gene and I've
got to agree it exceptionaly smooth to drive.With regards to cylinder heads a lot of the CNC stuff is more suited to turbo/ nitrous applications as
far as exhaust flow goes, a good set of hand ported Vw heads will do you just fine IMO. And for the sidewinder exhaust you will regret it every time
you get under the car to remove the muffler to run the valves.I am
running a 2332 310a cam Vw heads IDAs 44 mm Vintage speed competition exhaust,Dave Buttler swinger daily driven hard.current best 13.41@97.in full
steet trim.There's a lot of cars with heaps cooler sounding parts than mine but my combo has provent its self repeatedly.I was considering selling my
engine and box last week but not now it's so much fun!

Must say as much as the k8/GB 310 is cols cam of the week..... I have it from a very experienced guru, that it is a terror for causing wear and
failure ( sorry col)
Yep vintage speed exhausts are the shiz!
Find some heads that flow in your valve lift range...... How often are you going to hit 7000 tho, really...... No really?...... Get something drivable
and tourqey to go with that stroker, keep the rpm down and as such longevity up!
Yes dells are smooooooth!

I do not mean to sound negative but if you remove all the parts that are forged or even partially built in china from the VW world, the parts world
would be gone. I use them but check everything very closely, you cannot take anything for granted , because it is a standard size part( even German
parts) does not mean that it will fit . I like your combo Pete , have built almost the same combo (2275 FK8 ) multiple times with good results.
Cole I agree with you on the heads, a set of 40x35 or 42x38 heads that DB bestowes a little love on would be a great setup.

Yeah Damo, a 78 & matching flywheel just went for US$1900 on ebay - still a little $$ for me..and try to find a Berg 82 that you don't need to
sell a kid for!
I'll be getting a nitrated 4340 CB or Scat race crank and some CB H rods with ARP bolts as they sound like they can hold some big HP.
Next thing is VW or Chevy journals for more clearance?
I used to rev my old 1916 to 6.5-7K daily and I did calm down a little on the 2165, but I was young dumb and full of c.. so I guess you are right..go
calmer in cam.
I'm still at a loss with the heads AND I didn't ask the question of AS41 or aluminium? and which aluminium?

x 4 on the heads, 043's properly ported, 42x35. I have a few motors with China crank/rods but as said previously, must be checked thouroughly, ARP
bolts of course.
I like mag cases, but If I must use Al, use a CB or Scat Al case with a higher deck so no shims required, but remember, they need a ton of work, even
at fitting tinware stage.

No pete I don't have Dave Buttler heads just a DB gearbox the best!The heads have been looked after by Matt Berry!If you want a 74mm? Welded cw crank
by Pauter Brad Graham in QLD has one I think he wanted $400 for it.I've got his Number if you want to chase it up he may also have a set of 94mm jeff
Simpson heads and p/b kit. but not sure he's having a bit of a clear out.If you hunt around here you'll find what you need,keep you options open and
you'll come up with something you'll be happy with I'm happy except Daimos bumming me out this morning

So the dreamer 2276cc has also been hit by hit GFC and it's gunna be a 1904cc.
Progress thus far to get the big picture:
Came across some new old Mahle 90.5 b&p, Fish26 donated an old 74mm crank, picked up some CB rods with the arpm bolts, have bought a lightened
cromo flywheel/HD crank bolt/1700 Kennedy & clutch plate off Rod.
Crank ground and all balanced by Bob at Action cranks.
Bought a donor TP1600 for the tinware and AS41 case, that has been to Stan the man and is opened up and taped for full flow.
Spent lots of $$ at Berg with a new linkage/breather/26mm pump & pressure cover/full Traction bar kit (nose cone, hd mounts and tramp bar).
Looking to run a set of 45 dells with the update kit.
Love the look of the ceramic 1 5/8 sidewinders Rod is stocking.
I need some input on the heads and cam I'm looking to run.
I have been emailing Darren at DRD about one of his CNC ported 42x37.5 L6 top end kits as the REVMASTER 049 castings he starts off with look
beautiful and the flow figures look great.
He is saying his R302 cam and lifters is the best all round cam for what I'm doing (weekend warrior & beating Craig in the new under 2ltr drag
class!)
DRD R302 Cam, 302 duration, .530 lift( Hot street cam , 2000cc and larger, dual carbs and good heads, used in 180hp street engines, broad power band
revs to 6700 rpms.
The cam looks to be essentially the same as the K8 and Web 86b but they are on a chilled iron billet cam blank.
Anyone running one of these chilled iron cams and the reground and treated lifters or have any input on them and how they wear?
My concern my right foot gets too heavy or if I miss a gear and get some valve float the hardness may be less forgiving?
I will get the lifter bores resleeved - Who does this in Sydney?
Basically what is the thought on these cams out there?

If you gonna re-sleeve the lifter bores, I like the GB309 but better still FK45 or CB 2250 would be my choice with CB Ultralight Lifters

Will be aiming at around a mild 9:1 comp as it needs to be able to sit on the highway and in summer traffic etc.

I'm needing to sort the serious lack of power issue out and I've finally collected all the bits I need to build the AA thickwall 2180cc so I finally
pulled my finger out and made the 82mm fit into the case by hand clearancing
Next will be checking the cam clearance and mock up for deck height

I bought that car from Joel, who I think bought it from you. I had it for a few years then sold it to Steve Muller, who parted it out.
I think you also built my 1916 that went into my '76 back in the day.

Well I'll be!
I tracked it down and tried to buy it off the guy Steve sold it to (less all the good bits) about 3 years ago after he had put a stock dask back into
it and wanted too much, he then sold it to to a mate for what I originally offered and now my buddy Warren has it!
Did it still have the berg shifter, konis and whiteline swaybars when you sold it to Steve?
Man it used to handle well

Hi Pete, yes when I sold the car to Steve, it was complete with the exception of the moon discs.
Do you remember building my 1916 when you were at Hellbug? It went into my Yellow '76
