Timing Marks
Hi All
See below a picture of my pulley; I'm not sure what the timing marks are, as all my manuals (including the original owners manual!) and on-line
review are saying that it's a 2 mark pulley with 7.5 & 10 BTDC marked on.
But what's throwing me is the dimple on the outer rim; which lines up with the left hand notch & this dimple also lines up 180 degrees with the
other timing mark.
I've normally set my timing on the left mark (as per the books) but if the left mark is infact TDC (not 7.5 BTDC) then what is the right hand one?
The engine is a 1300 F series motor - from an Aussie '67 Deluxe.
Does anyone else out there have this pulley? I've not been able to find a picutre of a similar one online (the samba, shoptalk, and here).

Yeah it's 7.5 and 10
.....another 30mm around the circumference from the 10' mark will give you the point for 30 degrees ( use one of those student flexible rulers)
The other one, pretend it's not there

Cool yeah, ya vids of the lil 1300cc are pretty cool
I would dial in 30 degrees total and wherever idles sits, let it be..... Even 32' total if it has a flat spot and run 98 octane
You heading to the nationals?

THe big dimple marks on the outer rim are always TDC.
If the left notch lines up with it then the right will be either 5 or 7.5, too close to TDC to be 7.5
by 180degrees do you mean there is another mark at the bottom of the pulley when those ones are lined up?
if so some one has put that there for adjusting the valves, I used to do the same with stock pulleys.

180 degrees around the pulley from the dimple is a notch on the inside of the pulley which is directly opposite the left hand notch and dimple.
Yeah it looks like an add on from someone else, as I can't find any documentation that says my pulley had a TDC mark; and it appears the valves are
adjusted off the 7.5deg mark (left notch) all my manuals are backing this up (bentley & VW circa '67)

Has anyone used a advance function timing light?
I used mine for the first time today I set it to 29 degrees and I rev'd it up to 3200+rpm and then moved the dizzy so my mark I made at 29.5 lined up
with the case; is this correct? It ran real good but I wasn't sure if it was the right way of doing it...
I'm thinking if I dial it in at 10 deg (right mark) and then adjust the light to 29 deg or 30 deg and then rev it to 3200 and move it so it's back
on the 10 mark it will be timed correctly.
Anyones thoughts?
It may be easier to adjust it to TDC but seeing as there isn't a mark it's a bit harder
My Bosch 019 isn't as shite as the chinese 009's floating around so it's guaranteed to stop advancing after 17 deg and the dwell angle on the NOS
points is bang on at 50

Yeah first senario sounds right
You retard the light/strobe against firing so the tdc mark then shows at the timing marker/case split as your selected setting..... So you will need
to take into account those 7.5 or 10 marks to use them
Remember I'm a dumbarse tho 
Damn on the nats, was looking forward to a few link and swingers in one group

I think your over complicating your new timing light. Either advance the light to 30*, rev it to 3000+ and check with light, you should set to
zero.... OR, leave your light at zero, rev up to 3000+ and set to your calculated notch on the pulley that you measured to 30* (about an inch to the
right of the two marks pictured).
Your pulley has 7.5 and 10* notches. The shallow groove on the outer edge is bogus so too will the one 180* around, someone f'd up putting on two TDC
marks for valve adjusting.

Nah, not how you use an advance light sorry Shaun & Damo - basically the advance setting on the light "retards" the light by the amount, so if
you're still using a +29 mark then you've effectively got double the advance.
The whole idea of an advance light is so you don't need so many marks on the pulley - you can just use the TDC mark to dial in whatever timing you
want.
To do that, correct way of using 'em is to:
- set the light to the max advance you want (e.g. 30)
- rev the engine to 3000 to make sure it's at max advance
- adjust the dizzy so when the light fires the TDC mark is lined up with the case.
So if you were going to use your 10 deg BTDC mark, you'd set the timing light to 20 deg... TDC + 30 = 30, and 10 + 20 = 30.
Clear as mud ???

Timed and running sweet!
Managed to get it at 29.5 degrees by advancing 22 on the light and timing to the left notch as always

Your lucky that you still have stock pulley in a way, the degreed pulleys are useful but I found that the one on my sons bug was 6 degrees out, most
likely a combination of a Chinese crank and the degreed pulley.

Question - if the dizzy only has a max advance of 17 degrees then at 3000+ rpm shouldn't the engine be timed to 7.5+17=24.5?
I thought the 30 degrees was to take into account the poor quality of the newer 009's.
Any ideas chaps?

No, tune for total advance, I shoot for 32-34 depending on the engine. It's the initial that will change depending on the distributer

Yar, just did a bit of reading on that. Funny that the idle advance will be 12 degrees on that dizzy compared to 8-10 for later 009's.
Glad I have my vac advance really cos I sure don't miss my German 009
