lowest idlle speed

Hi all, whats the lowest sensible idle speed i should run on my 61 baja beetle, 1600tp?

Its at about 1200rpm hot idle, but it drives me nuts because it sounds like its racing. I know there is a danger of overheating with low speeds but i have an accurate oil gauge adn i never have high temps.

Can we run a 900 idle on these things?

a work shop book here ( for the type 3 cooling system though) says 600 - 650 rpm. i had my old beetle with a 1500 set at 750rpm and it seemed fine

yikes.. ONE BOOK SAYS 550??

ANOTHER SAYS 800-900 and the semi auto to 1000rpm

chiltons says 550 very early then 750 or 850 rpm

so, looks like 850 for a standard 1600 engine..

1200rpm is much too fast....

and Your engine won't over heat when idling at 850 rpm...
with the choke OFF...

automatic choke will increase the idle speed depending on the temperature....

800 to 850 rpm is OK...

My semi automatic is running at 1000rpm at the moment and about 900-950 in the summer..

Lower is better than 1200...

Your carburetor is made to operate at the lower speeds...
and Your distributor depending on what model
vacuum or mechanical or both...
