Fender Beading
Hey Hey,
Question, regarding the colour of fender beading.
1966/67 Australian VW Beetle, the fender beading was "coloured coated"?
I am certain, that before my Beetle was repainted in '98, the fender beading was the same colour as the body - VW Blue, see the the copy of the
brochure*.
The reason, I am asking, I saw a link that that: MemberSpecial Air Service provided in a thread:
http://shop.hoffmann-speedster.com
The site has coloured sells VW Blue coloured beading. to keep the original factory look, should I get the blue beading?
Thanks,
Zaius

I have a German build '68 in VW Blue and from memory the original beading was also colour coded
BTW, do you by any chance have a colour code for VW Blue? I have the German code but it doesn't cross reference to any paint in Australia that I can
find
Cheers.........Wayne

Hey zayus, do you understand German? Looked at the Hoffman site but can't work out whether the beading is enough for one fender or all four. Also,
they don't appear to freight to Australia either. Any ideas?

Hi Wayne,
I don't have a colour code.
when my car was painted, the panel beater/painter matched the paint with the colour under the dash.
From a small amount of research, I think the colour on our cars is VW Blue, However, I checked: thesamba.com
German built '68 Beetle- L 50 K (47) Neptune blue. That could be the coluor?
Paint codes, huh?!

Hi
A freind of mine went to a great deal of trouble to colour code his mudguard beading (boats have fenders) I remember someone asking him why he didnt
take the beading out before painting the car. He used some sort ingredient in the paint to prevent cracking.

Steve, you are right about mudguards [Fenders are guitars, aren't they?]......not sure about 'beading', though. It's always been 'piping' to me.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

I have emailed Hoffman's and both they and I believe their blue beading is not VW blue. Their customer service has been really good.
I have now emailed VW Heritage to see if their dark blue beading is similar to the blue in the VW logo

Yes, that is what they wanted to charge me for beading, a horn and 2 door switches. They were apologetic about the freight charge but not negotiable.
Still never received such good email service from any other supplier anywhere (including oz)
Will be interesting to compare with Heritage for both service and freight costs
Cheers

I now remember taking the right rear fender (mud guard) off the car (around 1995) and discovered the beading was white. The beading and fender had
been painted after they had been put back on the car.
Love learning about the techniques used when prepping/putting Beetles back togethor.

German made cars used a different color code etc to Australian made or assembled cars
I read recently somewhere the color codes [and colors] on cars , the beading and interior for German made cars and noticed the different colored
beading..
I only thought there was black and white..!!
although have seen a few different blacks and a flat blackish color, these were not genuine VW beading..
also have seen different sizes of beading...
the normal ? size and large beading...
the difference was noticeable...
I always thought the non genuine flat blackish/grey beading was to allow it to be painted...
Painting the beading while on the car and mud guards bolted on, I thought would be difficult ?? but I'm no painter... lol

After a bit of a nudge, VW Heritage have responded. Their fender beading in dark blue is apparently close to VW Blue, so I have ordered a length.
Postage is 20 pounds.
Once it arrives I will post on here how good the colour and quality is
Cheers....wayne

OK, the VW Heritage dark Blue fender beading or mudgaurd piping or windlace what ever you want to call it has arrived. The colour is not perfect
(there again my paint is stuffed and the original blue beading on the back guards has faded heaps) but very good. Much more expensive than using
black however worth it in my opinion.
Thanks Zayus for asking the original question, as I had no idea that coloured beading was available now
Cheers.......Wayne
