There are fibreglass ones out there much cheaper, if you don't mind it not being original

If it is a 54 they are different. And cost more!

there are good reproduction metal ones available as well

probally wont cost you 3 or 400 in repairs to a S/Hand one if you finda reasonable engine lid

How about we all do ourselves a favour and stop talking up the price of vw parts. The yanks do a good enough job of that already!!! Did you hear about the $3500 accessory ashtray that was broken???
Last years nats had a guy with about half a dozen of them for around $300 each.
In germany you can pick them up for $200 dead straight and perfect.
IT SH#TS ME TO TEARS when people talk high prices for parts. It's only going to get exponentially worse from here on end.
I saw an ugly old aftermarket steering wheel on here the other day for $1000 !!!! god help us if we all start to think our old crap is worth mega bucks.

A saw a mint PORSCHE 356 bonnet on ebay the other day for $250. Get some perspective!!!!

So your not looking for one, not interested in them and not trying to buy one. that makes you the LAST person to be talking up their prices. sook.

People will pay as much as they want if they "want" an item - if they choose to pay way too much .. so be it !

Supply and demand. That's all it is. Find a good 54 w lid with no rust or repairs, then tell me how much it's worth.

I'm with Birdman on this. I can't sell a registered oval for $6k. But if I strip it and sell it in parts I can easily double my asking price?
Being fair is what's rare. Soon the VW scene will be all about trading parts and shows will be only of parts and trophies awared for shiniest chrome and biggest display. Cars will be but a memory. We've all been burnt and we've all had some bargains. What feels better?

Yea, I agree with birdman also, I think sometimes people don't look hard enough to find stuff, yes you might need to look over seas but you can always find cheaper than the 'dreamers' out there.

Just wait till a whole lot of the older generation start dropping off the perch. Sounds morbid but in my life time there are going to to be shed finds, the likes of which no other generation has even encountered. A market flooded with parts will make it cheaper. I just think how happy some people would be if i dropped off my perch and my family of disinterested non vw people virtually give it away. So many people sitting on so many parts and cars. They don't go with you. Well not that i have worked out yet. lol. Think that drive me crazy is certian people always recommending certina shops etc and yet these same shops are living in the 80's. with both their prices and internet presence. it's 2012 and they have the stupiest on line shops. nothgin more than pretty pictures.
