Or a 5 speed subarugears transmission that definately holds the power and is correctly geared to use your engines torque and power curves correctly.

I priced up all the individual bits that go with doing a conversion into a vw box compared the the subi box, if you are capable and willing the cost
is much the same either way. alot of the questions you might want to ask are currently being discused but in a lowlight in another thread, check it
out

plenty of info on T3 conversions here and on the net. If you want drivability and reliability I would think a NA engine would be a better option, say
a 2.2 or larger rather than a turbo motor. What ever you do don't get a twin turbo, way too much complexity to get them running right. And now that
Subigears have their set up I'd go that way if I had my time over again.

I doubt you have the brakes, chassis, suspension or traction to be able to use WRX power effectively in that car. You will kill it and yourself.
A nice upgrade to an EJ25 twin cam and 5 speed will fit in there easily, give you smooth cruising and more power than you know what to do with.
You won't have the hassle of dealing with the turbo heat either.
And....you will probably actually get it finished.

Another tick for the Subaru gears solution is that the 5 speed T3 boxes can be a little fragile.

EE20 has been done in a Vanagon in the states. Depends how badly you want a boxer diesel.
That engine is waaay pricy, you can get jap import ones a lot cheaper than that. Add around $2200 for the ECU, harness and maps. you need to run a
turbo gearbox for the EE20 because of it's torque and you need to get a Subie diesel starter motor.
Smallcar has done it in the states in a Vanagon.
I'd just do an EJ25 - it's got plenty.

I have a EJ25 in my T3 DC. Definitly a big up grade from the stock engine. But I can see what your getting at wanting to go a turbo engine. The ej25
has good power but you soon get used to it. I borrowed in the inlaws new Holden Captiva which has a turbo diesel, totally loved all the extra torque
and pulled a car trailer with ease. I often load my DC up with over 700kg and it struggles. The eZ30 would be pretty awsome but shit on fuel, would
average 14L /100km. I would love to go the ee20 diesel boxer but very hard to find in any wreckers and then there's all the other conversion bits. Im
thinking maybe best just to step up to a T5 2.5 TDI dual cab. I was checking them out on youtube, those engines look the bomb.....

EZ30D (the old one) in a T2 Kombi with trailer of firewood gets 10L/100kms my customer tells me. That's with a 4.1 final drive in his Subie 5
speed.
If you think an EJ25 is not enough for you (and personally I think it's plenty) then go EZ30 or go EJ25T - there's plenty of them around.
One of my customers in Seattle, USA has an EJ25 na and Subie 5 speed 4.1 final drive in his T3 and loaded it up with a few hundred kgs of bricks to
see how sprightly it was around the steep mountains. Still had plenty. Check out David Clymer's build thread and videos on the Samba. Always good to
see what it's actually like from someone that's actually done it.

I just checked out David Clymer's video. Drives amazing. So much better with the subi gear box. The Vw box is just to tight and revs way to high at
freeway speeds. Im definitly going to try one of your subi boxes in my conversion before upgrading, I think it will make all the difference. Mine is a
qaud cam ej25, is there much difference with the twin cam as far as power and reliability goes?

Nah both 16 valve engines anyway. The turbo engines tend to be quad cam (and slightly lower compression) and the n/a engines tend to be twin cam (and
slightly more compression) but that's just generalising. Give it a shot with your EJ25, you'll be very happy. Easy enough to add a hairdryer later
on if you get bored.
