Shannons Insurance question
Hi all,
Hoping that some of you that may be insured (comprehensive) with Shannons, especially Kombi drivers, might be able to clarify something for me.
I just got off the phone to one of their reps as I'm considering getting comprehensive insurance with them, primarily because of salvage
rights.
I've put alot of work into the interior of the Kombi (yes pics to be posted in Member's Rides soonish!) and there's alot in there that
I'd want to be able to strip out in the event of the unspeakable.
I've been quoted roughly $570 p.a. including salvage rights based on a $9000 agreed value. Firstly does this sound about right?
Now I don't mind paying that for peace of mind but here's the sticking point. They have said that I need to get an immobiliser fitted by one
of their approved alarm specialists. Three names given were Brant, Black Widow and Rhino.
I'm thinking this isn't going to be exactly cheap but I don't think I can get salvage rights from any other insurer so I'm stuck
between a rock and a hard place.
Do all you VW/Shannons insured owners have immobilisers fitted?
Your thoughts please

NRMA wont insure you??
That figure is about right - forget what i paid.
I insured with NRMA for Daisy the 82 Kombi T2.5 vanagon air cooled whatever
No alarms, no garage.
My mate with the Lotos needed a Quick Trak for over $2k before they (Shannon) would insure him.
Although NRMA dont advertise salvage rights they are very good at being nice and i know of a few cases where you put in you bid and just by it back
Futue te ipsum!!!

It's currently with NRMA but no salvage rights. I confirmed that again with them this morning and they also said I couldn't pay any extra to
get salvage rights. There's just too much stuff on the current Kombi that I'd hate not to be able to get my hands on if worse came to
worse. Can't risk someone being nice or not unfortunately.

mmm...I tried today to upgrage my Kombi insurance from third party to comprehensive (fire & theft) with AAMI. However they don't do an agreed
value. It would be based upon glass's guide only which is probably only about $ 1800 for a 74 kombi.

I have my beetle insured with shannons if i'm correct you only get salvage rights included in your premium if the vehicle is over 35 yrs old. It
sounds like your paying extra for the salvage rights. My premium is about $125 on '69 beetle insured for $6000-$7000. I changed to shannons
because RACQ agreed value was a joke..... :thumb

There are a lot of thing to consider. You are charged on almost everything they ask you. Where is it kept? It’s cheaper if it’s in
a garage rather than the street. Also your age and the big one is usually the suburb your in. I know someone that is insured with Shannon’s
for $4500 and the premium was around $400 or something so it sounds like you have a good deal. Don’t know about the immobiliser. I have just
insured another car with them and they have advised, only advised that I get a kill switch which I will be doing. You haven’t had heaps of
driving offences or accidents? My friend just got the opinion for salvage and it cost $11.00 extra so it’s not a big thing. Make sure you
really check your stuff with other insurers as sometimes you think you have agreed and it’s market value. Big disappointment at claim time.
Also as far as salvage through other companies yes you usually can bid at the auction but if someone is there that knows there stuff you can easily be
out bid. Very scary if you love your car. I could be wrong but I don’t think Shannon’s use an automated system for quotes. I think
it is up to the individual underwriter so it may be worth making another call to check it.
Anyway right or wrong that’s my two cents worth.

Thanks for the input so far, please continue with your comments anywone else out there
I'm clear on driving offences and accidents etc and it's not the $570 that bother me so much, it's the potential cost of getting the
immobiliser (certified by Shannons) fitted that I'm more worried about.
Of the three companies they recommended (Brants, Black Widow and Rhino), any thoughts on which one I should go through?

Our bus is insured with Shannons and the policy does not state salvage rights. They did not ask for an immobiliser to be fitted either.
I will cross the salvage issue later if the unspeakable happens. In the meantime I am happier knowing it is covered.

INSURANCE
I've had my bug with shannons now for about 4 years its insured for $12000.00 and I'm paying about $516.00 a year with monthly installments
of $43.00 per month. Considering I've spent at least $50,000.00 in building my car.
I have full salvage and I paid about $500.00 for a security system from MCL Car Radio, mind you that was will central locking. Its a three point
imobilizer but I think they only require 2 point.
Considering your presant insurer proberly charges you just as much in premiums and only for market value, and lets face it older VWs aren't
considered to be worth mutch.
Good Luck

Kom We are insured through Shannons and had an imobilizer and alarm fitted by a pro. fitter for $350 and this was approved by Shannons. It was a
Cyclops. My wife was recently rear-ended in her bug and the cost of the repairs exceded the insured amount so they wrote off the car. We did not have
salvage rights but had first option to buy back at its current value (damaged) We bought it back at a reasonable price and have done the repairwork
ourselves at a much cheaper cost (no labor costs). They handled the claim very proffesionally and quickly. As soon as the car is finished we will be
re-insuring with them again.

My beetle is insured with shannons
agreed value of 8,000 policy about $450 but it is slightly cheaper through direct debit ie monthly.
comes with full salvage rights and the car is modified 64 body 70 chassis and other bits and pieces. the more modifications the higher the policy
car is gargaged sometimes and has a removable kill switch which is fine
was insured with FAI previuous but their policy stated agreed value or market value whichever is the lesser. this was on an agreed value policy |

Just last week insured with Shannon. The other insurers we tried couldn't get their heads around the concept of a transporter which wasn't a
Kombi.
Agreed value: $7000
Premium: $350, salvage rights included for $10/year
No immobiliser required, not garaged.
Our local Dick Smith has the Rhino immobilisers.

I have two buses insured with Shannons, both previously with NRMA who dont have agreed value and would only insure them for well under $5000, both are
now insured for $8000 each, salvage rights, garaged and both fitted with less than $20 kill switches...premium $577.58 for both... they are quick and
easy if need to make a claim...

My 72 crew cab ute is insured for agreed value of $10,000 with shannons. I have a kill switch, but no immobiliser. Shannons advised that if I get an
immobiliser it will reduce the excess I will have to pay. Besides that everything about the policy is the same.
The Kombi is garaged each night, I guess this might have something to do with it.

I have only heard of the Black Widow (expensive) and the Rhino from DSE.
I have a Rhino alarm fitted to My Lancer.
My Son fitted it to the car as He used to fit alarms etc at Strathfield Radios. If You can fit a Rhino immobilizer Yourself - there are different
models - it would be the most inexpensive way to go..... then just tell Shannons that there is a Rhino immobiliser fitted....
cheers Lee
