I use and recommend ACE 30 or ACE 40 for older engines. It is by name Air Cooled Engine Oil designed specifically for our air cooled engines and
totally Australian made/owned. Unfortunately it seems the website is down presently.

I used Penrite but now use Fuchs from the farther land 
ace is good too

I use Gulf Western comp 50 in my slightly worked 2L. Has been working great, engine always runs cool.
59 beetle,61 beetle,72 dual cab,58 beetle,55 splitty,
65 manx,74 camper,60 Rat beetle.....and many more to come
