Distributor WTF is it ?
Hi Folks,
Have just rejoined the vee dub community after a few years sans Bus. I purchased myself a 74 Camper that *seemed* to have a fair bit of work done to
it.
As the story goes ou never never know
Anyhoo such is life and its mine now so time to get it right.
Im noticing a fair amount of sluggishness on takeoff and a complete lack of power on any if not all hills, get used to it you say, I am and its a bit
worse than normal. The bus sounds absolutely great and never misses a beat, PO reckons its a rebuilt 2 litre blah blah blah etc etc
Anyhoo it seems that it does not have a standard distributor, is this where my woes are at.
Cap and rotor part numbers are as follows
rotor - 1234 332 082
Cap - 1235 522 027
Eng. Num. AP040812
The only thing I could find was at Type2.com and referred it to the following
3 1.6 AT 04/72>07/73 0 231 115 096 1 237 013 130 1 234 332 082 1 235 522 027 1 237 330 220
E,EL,LE,TE,TLE04/72>07/73 0 231 163 027 1 237 013 130 1 234 332 082 1 235 522 027 1 237 330 220

Have I got a Type3 1600 Dizzy in my 1800/2000 ? Engine ????
Any Info Muchly appreciated.
Cheers
Scott
P.s I have pics if anyone wants to look at distributor rotor/cap pictures

I had this problem on my fantastic rebuilt 2L & it turned out the mechanical advance in the distributor was NOT working, if you have a timing
light hook it up & make sure it is advancing with increased revs, if this is the problem or the timing is too retarded it is very bad for the
motor long term
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54

Hi Folks,
Sorry more info.
Dual Carbs.
Doesnt appear to be a 009. It has a vacuum advance on it. The guys at Import Advantage had no idea what it was by sight so im assuming its not a
standard kombi dizzy. I tried the 009 Cam Rotor it looks very similar but the cap is much shorter and the rotor has a stubby bottom rather than a
longer one. Cap will fit but is definately too tall and rotor is a no go.
Ill check the vacuum advance !!!
The PO just had it serviced with reciepts valves timing etc were all done the week before i bought it, it certainly sounds good and runs smooth so im
assuming its all done !!! Is just the sluggish acceleration and lack of power.
Cheers
Scott

may be the carbs are not opening to full throttle
Get someone to hold the pedal down (engine off) and look down the throats to see if the butterfly is fully open

An AP** engine was a 1.8L originally, but as 1.8L and 2L parts are interchangeable, it’s hard to say what it is now. (you can put 2L barrels and
crank in 1.8L case to make 2L, and swap heads).
As for the dissy, can you read the number stamped in the body of it? An original will have both a Bosch and VW number there. It will be easier to
track that.
Can you maybe get in touch with who did the service before you bought it and ask them?
The Mick motors web sight has a list VW part numbers which might help.
Also try the BusDepot.com web sight.

Ok Ive researched oldvolkshome.com, busdepot.com Rang mick motors checked type2.com, done a google. About all ive found so far is that part number
relates to a Type3 Distributor cap from a 1600cc engine. And that a replacement cap is available from Taiwan !
What type of distributor is stock for an 1800 dual carb ??? 009 ???? If so I think ill just hit the wreckers for a 009 and be done with it.
Ill post some photos when im home tonight.
Thanks for the help guys.....
S.

Hi
Thats an Aussie made bosch dizzy from a 1600 Beetle, it should have vaccum and centrifugal advance. If its vaccum only its an early bug dizzy.
Rotor is a GB 524 and cap is a GB 514. Points for an early bug are GB 516 and the later bug are GB 529., they are both 2 piece points unlike most
late er VW dizzies which almost always used GB 534 points.
This is another trap with Australia only parts that were fitted here.
