reduction box gearbox how to

I am in the process of trying to pull the gearbox out of our 64 DC splitty ute apart to fix 4th and reverse gear. We can not get one of the brake drums off. Do I need to take the brake drums off or can i remove the axles some other way. The mechanic is having a hard time and well I need this box done ASAP.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Do not hit anything with a hammer, just ends up costing more money to fix the damage, back the shoes off, load the drum up with a puller and heat the center of the drum with the oxy.
